Mel Gibson Helps Formerly Conjoined Guatemalan Twins Celebrate 10th Birthday (VIDEO)

Mel Gibson has done a lot of questionable things in the last few years, but he's also done some good. In 2002, Guatemalan conjoined twins Maria de Jesus and Maria Teresa went through a 23-hour surgery at UCLA to be separated. 'The Early Show' (weekdays, 7AM on CBS) reported that Gibson and the Mending Kids organization partnered to finance the kids' surgery, and didn't release the information of Gibson's involvement publicly.Gibson has reportedly remained close with the twins in the intervening years, and went to their 10th birthday party recently. "You only have to talk to that little girl to realize that she has this hunger for life and this enthusiasm and this joy," said Gibson.
"She's so happy. And she's dealt with so much. And it's kind of like a lesson to all of us about, you know, what do we ever complain about?"
So we lay the snark aside, if only for today, to praise Gibson for doing a good deed, and for not bragging about it, even when his image could have used the help.
