What to Watch: TV Picks for August 8 - 14

Karaoke Battle USA - Friday August 12, 9 PM ET/PT

All the televised singing competitions have suffered the slings and arrows of being called nothing but a karaoke contest. Finally, a show that actually is just a karaoke contest. If you're lucky, you live in a town with a popular karaoke night with a couple of truly talented regulars -- you know, the whole bar roots for them and enjoys the performance, and they often have a signature tune or two.

This show brings those people together for a sing-off, hosted by Joey Fatone and judged by singer Carnie Wilson, journalist Joe Levy, and Brian Scott, the 2009 National Karaoke Champion. I'm really looking forward to Levy's contributions -- I remember him from his witty comments on 'Behind the Music' type shows on the late 90s and early 2000s. He was my most obscure celebrity crush.

Also This Week:

Bachelor Pad - Monday August 8, 8 PM ET/PT, Citytv/ABC

This 'Bachelor' spin-off enters its second season tonight, and among the professional daters in the house are Jake Pavelka and his ex "fiancée" Vienna Girardi, who is now dating previous 'Bachelorette' contestant Kasey Kahl, who will also be on the show. So, I'm guessing drama is the order of the day.

Curiousity: The Questions of Life - Sunday August 15, 8 PM ET/T, Discovery

This new series was spearheaded by Discovery's founder John Hendricks, and will feature 60 episodes over 5 years with 16 episodes airing throughout the fall. It asks the big questions -- like did God design the universe and why do we age -- and using celebrity presenters that we associate with those ideas to guide us through the information. Tonight it's Michelle Rodriguez from 'Lost' wondering how we might survive an alien attack.

Canada AM - Thursday August 11, 6 AM ET, CTV

Norman Jewison's interview with Seamus O'Reagan is the first sign of approaching TIFF fever -- he's being honoured for a lifetime of achievement this year. Those include 'Fiddler on the Roof' and one of my favourites, 'Moonstruck,' and founding the Canadian Film Centre.
