CBS Orders 'Bewitched' Reboot Script

by Chris Harnick, posted Aug 10th 2011 10:00AM
BewitchedIs CBS looking for a little magic in its 2012 lineup? The network has reportedly ordered a 'Bewitched' reboot script from Sony.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 'Miss Congeniality' writer Marc Lawrence will write the script and executive produce. Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, executive producers of the 2005 film version starring Nicole Kidman, will produce the potential new comedy.

The original 'Bewitched' starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, a witch who marries a mortal -- played by Dick York and Dick Sargent. The series ran for eight seasons on ABC.

To say remakes are hot in Hollywood is an understatement. ABC is rolling out a 'Charlie's Angels' reboot in September 2011, 'Hawaii Five-0' is entering its second season CBS and TNT has a new incarnation of 'Dallas' coming up.

Tell us: Does a new 'Bewitched' make you excited or nervous?

I am such a huge fan of bewitched. I would love to see a remake only if it's anything like the original show.

It could work. It is a sad state of affairs that when they try these things, they often DON'T work. I often wonder how it is possible that Saturday Night Live is often not funny. How a superhero movie with 75 years of stories behind it is a disaster. How a remake can be a flop. Most of us fans could give ten pages of notes on how NOT to fail on a remake of a classic. Why does Hollywood so often FAIL?

Make Jim J. Bullock Uncle Arthur. Make RuPaul Endora. Katherine Helmond can be Aunt Clara. Jim Parsons Darrin (or at least the second Darrin a few seasons from now). It could be done, and it could be great. But it probably won't be.

The only way I would watch this is if they replace the Darin a few episodes in, but keep the original Darin still around like a crazy person trying to get his life back. The Will Ferrell movie should have worked that way.

Please make it stop. :-( When are TPTB going to realize these reboots never work or at the very least never work as well as they think they will. I can only think of two "reboots" that "worked" (depending on your definition of that), the theatrical version of "The Fugitive" with Harrison Ford and the current TV reboot of "Hawaii 5-O." "Fugitive" was a good movie - not great, good - with a somewhat weak ending and a supporting character that stole the show from the lead. And while successful, "H5O" is not exactly the HUGE MEGA MONSTER hit CBS thought it would be. I do a list as long as my arm (and I have really long arms) of reboot flops. Just please stop. Please, please, please think up something new people!!!

Thrilled! It's still my favorite after all these years. I just don't want them over-modernizing it. She still needs to be home with the kiddos, taking care of things.
