Tyler Perry Getting a TV Network?

by Chris Harnick, posted Aug 10th 2011 11:22AM
Tyler PerryComing soon to your TV: A whole network dedicated to Tyler Perry. Yes, one different than TBS.

According to the New York Times, Lionsgate and Perry are forming Tyler TV, a network dedicated to Perry's projects, including TV shows and movies. The plan for Tyler TV is to make the network home to reruns of Perry's sitcoms and movies. Third-party content that "meshes with Mr. Perry's Christianity-tinged brand" will also be purchased.

Perry's sitcoms on TBS include 'House of Payne,' 'Meet the Browns' and the newest, 'For Better or For Worse.' Both 'Payne' and 'Browns' started off strong for TBS, pulling in more than 5 million and 4 million viewers, respectively. Their numbers have dropped, but continue to be some of TBS's top-rated programs.

'Payne' was recently canceled.

"Even though it will be sad to say goodbye to 'House of Payne,' I'm really looking forward to exploring new territory with 'For Better or Worse,'" Perry said in a statement. "Working on 'House of Payne' taught me a lot about what it takes to make a successful television series and I'm looking forward to applying that experience to 'For Better or Worse.'"

His films, including 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman,' have sold more that $522 million in tickets.

According to the report, Lionsgate and Perry are looking at three different possible routes of distributing Tyler TV. One involves rebranding the TV Guide Network, which Lionsgate owns 50 percent of, another is buying a small cable channel that has a similar audience and the third is working with Comcast.

@ivo da grea you cant blame Perry for what Will Smith and Denzel are doing, your basically saying if you're black u can go and become famouse, but dont you do dare try and take it further, it's almost like your creating a ceiling for black people to stop at, besides as popular as perry is you giving him too much credit both Smith and Denzel can practicly do whatever they want a popular as they are, if you don't see anything comeing from them, it's because they dont feel like it or just working on a huge project. I believe America is still alittle racist but i doubt it's so bad that there can only be one popular black actor at a time.
@august give it a rest Perry does a kind of comedy that takes on very sterio typed charicters, its a comedy of course its alittle exageratted, ive seen way worse movies on how black people act. 1st off why would a true racist go 2 see a tyler perry movie 2nd if a white person truly believes thats how black people act.....there an idiot and ignorent.

I admire him for what he is doing for himself and his fans, but i think he killed the black actor who are not apart of his movie chains, i notice since his arrival we haven't seen much other major movies starring black actors, take this summer for instance, where is the blockbuster from will smith or denzel? Thanks to him the movie industry seem to turn away from our black actors and are now only interested in producing tyler perry type movies, and guess what, we all are not interested in seeing a grown man dress in drag with the same set of pretty black people around him cry, laugh and have a happy ending.

I'm glad he has enough ego to spawn a channel.

It's sad however that he continues to depict blacks in cliched roles that are just a step above minstrels.

I think he and Orprah seond entirely too much tme on the phone, copying each other's moves.
