'Rugrats' 20th Anniversary: Where Are They Now?

by Laura Prudom, posted Aug 11th 2011 9:15AM
Here's something to make the millennials in the crowd feel positively ancient: Today marks the 20th anniversary of the day 'Rugrats' first premiered on Nickelodeon.

Don't pretend you don't remember the misadventures of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil, and Angelica -- 'Rugrats' ran for 14 years (the longest-lived Nicktoon to date, premiering alongside 'Doug' and 'Ren and Stimpy'), spawned three movies, countless video games, an 'All Grown Up' spin-off, and remains the only Nickelodeon show to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In a 1995 TV Guide interview, Steven Spielberg described the show as "sort of a TV 'Peanuts' of our time," and IGN ranked it #92 in their list of Top 100 Animated Series. Not bad for a bunch of babies who can't even talk, right?

We at AOL TV are big fans of Where Are They Now? retrospectives, and we didn't want to let a little thing like fictional characters stop us from imagining where our favorite small-screen toddlers might have ended up twenty years down the line. Join us after the jump for our take on what the gang might be doing now that they really are all grown up.

Then:
Though Tommy was the youngest of the toddlers at one year old, he was still their de facto leader over the course of the series. The blue-shirted baby led the gang into adventure every week by breaking them out of their playpen with a handy toy screwdriver he always kept stashed in his diaper. The 'All Grown Up' spin-off saw Tommy (now rocking purple hair like his dad) as a burgeoning filmmaker at 11.
Now: We see Tommy putting his adventurous nature and filmmaking skills to good use by trekking off into real jungles like a younger, kookier-looking Bear Grylls. He's roommates with his 'fraidycat BFF Chuckie when he's in the country, but after a close encounter with a crocodile on their first trip, Chuckie refused to come on any more crazy excursions with him.

Chuckie Finster

Then: Though Chuckie was the oldest of the core four babies, you wouldn't have known it to look at him -- the kid was always shaking, cowering and hiding whenever the going got tough. Despite this, he would always follow Tommy into trouble, even when the kids graduated to middle school.
Now: Still the cowardly lion of the group, we bet that Chuckie found a reprieve from the dangers of the outside world by becoming a genius computer whiz. Being a hacker would be far too risky for this delicate flower, so he's probably some sort of gentle tech-support helper or mild-mannered programmer, and all the indoor time in front of a computer means he'll never have to worry about that pale, freckled skin getting sunburned.

Phil DeVillePhil DeVille (voiced by Kath Soucie)
Then:
Back when they were toddlers (older than Tommy at a year and three months) Phil and Lil were pretty interchangeable, and both had a penchant for eating worms and drinking toilet water -- yummy! When they grew up a little, their personalities became more distinct, with Phil retaining his love for all things gross and becoming a little more "socially inept" than his sister.
Now: Phil was always an experimental eater, and an 'All Grown Up' episode revealed him to be a surprisingly good cook, so we imagine Phil to be a competent chef in later life. Perhaps he's a little eccentric, but as the proprietor of the up-and-coming New York restaurant 'DeVille,' we can see him using his exotic palate to concoct some undeniably quirky recipes for adventurous diners. Just don't order the worm spaghetti ...

Lil DeVille (voiced by Kath Soucie)Lil DeVille
Then:
A few minutes older than Phil, Lil was the first to begin asserting her independence as the shows progressed, and she became more of a social butterfly in 'All Grown Up,' trying to establish her own style with hair dye and eclectic fashion choices.
Now: After having to share her identity with Phil as a kid, we imagine Lil acted out more as she grew older; she probably continued dyeing her hair a variety of crazy colors, got a tattoo and piercing or two, and tried to date a few bad boys. Now she's an alt-rocker on the LA indie scene, with a van, a pet snake and a hot, grungy guitarist boyfriend.

Angelica PicklesAngelica Pickles (voiced by Cheryl Chase)
Then:
Tommy's bratty cousin Angelica was the main antagonist of the series, often trying to shift the blame to the gang for her bad behavior, referring to them as "dumb babies" and gloating over the fact that the adults could understand her and not them. She mellowed a little in 'All Grown Up,' but still had spoiled tendencies and a penchant for overdramatics (as well as an unhealthy attachment to her favorite doll, Cynthia).
Now: Angelica was always destined to be a diva, and her dramatic flair would naturally attract her to an acting career. Sadly, we see her as more of a Joey Tribbiani than a Julia Roberts, and after a string of bit parts and embarrassing infomercials we're imagining a change in direction. Now, we don't want to sully your childhood by suggesting an adult film career, but we'll leave it to your imagination ...

What are your favorite memories of the 'Rugrats'? Where do you think they'd be in their twenties?

This is how I pictured it:
Tommy: Graduated film school in LA with a directorial degree. Currently working odd jobs to fund his submission to the Sundance Film Festival.
Chuckie: Moved to Boston with Lil to attend Harvard law. (He and Lil started dating and now live together.)
Phil: Graduated college with a Biology degree and graduated culinary school. Working as a prep chef at an organic foods restaurant (still holds on to love of gross things)
Lil: Attends Boston University with a Women's Soccer scholarship. Is now the lead forward at Boston U's team.
Angelica: Realized music wasn't her thing but her personality didn't do a 180. Graduated with a business degree and now is doing business with Kimi.
Susie: Moved to New York to pursue a music career. Has a music degree. Currently scoring commercial jingles and back-up work.
Dil: Was deemed too eccentric for college, but scored a GED at a community college. Now works as an intern for a paranormal studies institute in New Orleans.
Kimi: After high school, she moved to Japan to study fashion. Moved back a couple years later and now is working on a American/Japanese-fusion line with Angelica as business, and Kimi as creativity.

Too bad about Grandpa-David Doyle-whos no longer with us. But the Rugrats kids are now selling crack at the corner of Stab Me and Run, and Angelica is turning tricks, 2 for a nickel!
