'So You Think You Can Dance': The Winner Is ... (VIDEO)
It's been an exhilarating summer, but this season of 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thurs., 8PM ET on Fox) is finally at an end, and a new winner has been crowned.Last night, the contestants wowed in some routines and stumbled in others -- Marko and Melanie missed the mark in their disco, Tadd and Sasha failed to deliver for the cha-cha, and Nigel outright admitted that he believed a girl would win the season, but did one?
The 'So You Think You Can Dance' Season 8 champion is ...
Melanie Moore
Both girls have been incredible throughout the season, and Sasha's finale performances were almost uniformly inspired -- she dominated Marko in Broadway, channeled her inner warrior princess with her Sonya Tayeh performance, and went toe to toe with Melanie in their joint routine, but Melanie has arguably been the more consistent performer all year.
"Melanie, I don't believe we've ever had a better girl dancer than you," Nigel Lythgoe told her earlier in the season, and that opinion was certainly borne out by tonight's results, in which Melanie took 47 percent of the vote.
Melanie's contemporary routine with Robert had judges swooning (and Kenny Ortega offering her a role in 'Dirty Dancing'), and no-one could fault her jazz routine with Tadd -- add to that Sasha's off-weeks throughout the season, and the result seems like a no-brainer. The important part, though, is that both women (and the top four in general) put their hearts and souls into every performance, put their bodies on the line every week, and made memories that will last them (and us) a lifetime -- there were probably more tears this season than ever before.
Tonight's results show also revisited some of the most spectacular routines from previous weeks, including Sasha and Melanie's 'Game On' jazz piece, Caitlynn and Pasha's Argentine Tango, Melanie and Marko's lip-locking 'I Got You,' the Top Eight's circus routine, Sasha and Kent's electric 'Fool of Me,' and Ashley and Chris' sultry 'Please, Mr. Jailer,' to name a few. In fact, Nigel was so ... moved by 'I Got You' that he ended up in Jesse Tyler Ferguson's lap because of it.
When Cat Deeley asked the tearful winner if she had anything to say, Melanie could only murmur "thank you," as she tried to hold it together. We see a bright future ahead for America's new favorite dancer (regardless of whether or not that future includes 'Dirty Dancing').
