Tommy Has a Vision of 9/11, Struggles With Its Anniversary on 'Rescue Me' (VIDEO)

'Rescue Me' - '344'Tommy Gavin's hallucinations have been a staple of 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX) since the very beginning. Now that he's doing a good job of staying sober, though, we haven't gotten them as often. He has been having what he calls "dry drunk" episodes, which allow for sober hallucinations.

Two of them plagued him in this week's installment. When he went down to Ground Zero for reasons as yet unknown, he had a vision of 9/11 and saw Jimmy carrying a woman up from the subway tunnels. It was a sobering reminder of that day that haunts him so deeply, and a sobering reminder of his sobriety.

The other instance was far more harrowing, because it's always a little creepy when Damian gets up and starts talking to him. It was a beautifully filmed scene, as Damian himself looked almost angelic standing in Sheila's spotless bedroom, handing Tommy the letter Jimmy had written his wife before he died.

When Sheila caught Tommy in the room, the reality was far different. It showed the carnage of a frantic search, indicating that Tommy really had torn through her room looking for the letter he knew was there. Even though he was in the wrong, the Tommy we're seeing here is such a better man than he's been in past seasons.

He owns up to what he does, even if he doesn't understand it, and is trying to stand up for what's right. Yes, he's still unhealthily fixated on 9/11, but he's not the only one. Lou's speech about how both of them essentially "died" on that day along with their fallen brethren was a chillingly powerful moment.

Their friendship remains a solid glue that holds this show together. As the episode progressed, we found ourselves wondering if this series might end with Tommy Gavin finally getting the delayed death he's been chasing with all of his bravado in these fires. Could that be the only way to give closure to the rest of the cast?
