Jon Stewart and Anne Hathaway Geek Out About Scrabble (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 19th 2011 7:07AM
Anne Hathaway, 'The Daily Show'It turned into a bit of a nerd-fest on 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central) after the audience recognized his use of the 'World of Warcraft' font in a comedy bit. When Anne Hathaway came out, she called them her people.

Her nerd choice, apparently, is a love of the game Scrabble, which lead to what may be the longest interview discussion about Scrabble in the history of talk shows (at least with someone who isn't some kind of world Scrabble champion).

Jon Stewart and Hathaway talked about strategies playing on the computer, and some wisdom that Stewart got from his seven-year old son. The PC game offers you four chances to use a "Best Word" feature when you're playing the computer.

"Delay gratification," Stewart's son told him. If you wait until the end of the game to use all four, the computer has no chance. That way you get your best possible words late in the game, and the computer is floundering to handle your late-game surge.

Hathaway turned the advice around on Stewart again when he talked about his obsessive need to try and get the Triple Word scores, rather than go for the smaller players right in front of him.

But there can be some value in taking a risk toward a big score like a Triple Word, making smaller plays toward getting it. But you'd better get it, or you're going to be in big trouble. That many small plays with no big payoff can cost you the game.

And with that, we are officially ready to join 'The Daily Show's nerd contingent.
