What to Watch: TV Picks for August 22 - 28

Dan For Mayor - Sunday August 28, 7:30 pm ET/PT, CTV

As sure a sign of the end of summer as Labour Day, it's the season finale of 'Dan For Mayor' and its partner show, 'Hiccups' (following at 8:30). It means CTV is gearing up to dedicate its airwaves once more to shows about hot doctors, hot housewives and coming soon, hot stewardesses -- in other words, American shows. Tonight, Dan signs off with a show about the struggles of vegetarians, with a great many meat puns.

Also This Week:

Suits - Monday August 22, 10 pm ET, Bravo

Here in Canada, this show is being paired with 'Franklin & Bash,' the TNT lawyer show starring Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar, which I've eviscerated before. How's this for an unlikely premise? A guy who once passed the bar but didn't bother going to law school is caught running from a drug deal gone bad, and instead of getting his first strike, he gets a job as a lawyer. His mentor decides to train him up and keep it a secret from everyone that the kid is actually not in any way qualified to practice. You know, there are only a few jobs where it's really, really clear what qualifications you need to have. I fail to see why this kind of character study wouldn't have worked within one of those other jobs.

Sam Roberts Band at the Concert Hall - Tuesday August 23, 8 pm ET, Bravo

Oh, I can't stay mad at you, Bravo! Not when you continue to air this great series of intimate concerts at the Masonic Temple in Toronto. I love the old venue on Queen, but the larger size of the Masonic means rock n' roll acts like Sam Roberts Band can play truer sets. Great sound and great camera work are a hallmark of this series -- be ready to rock out.

MTV Video Music Awards - Sunday August 28, 9 pm ET, MuchMusic

Adele, L'il Wayne and Lady Gaga are among the performers this year, and Lady Gaga is going to make some kind of big announcement during the live show. Of course I've tried to guess what it might be, and felt stupid doing it, because it's exactly what Gaga wants. Is it too much too hope she'll be announcing she's taking a year off out of the pubic eye?
