This year's Video Music Awards saw Lady Gaga in drag, a tribute to Britney Spears, a surprise performance of 'Otis' by BFFs Jay-Z and Kanye West, and an epic performance of 'Love on Top' complete with pregnancy announcement by Beyonce -- and more than 12 million people tuned in to watch.
The 2011 VMAs were the highest-rated ceremony for the network ever, according to Deadline. In MTV's target 12-34 demographic, the telecast earned a 10.8 rating with 8.5 million people watching. Overall viewership increased 9 percent from last year's show, making the 2011 VMAs the most-watched non-sports cable show of the year.
According to Deadline, an eventful 'Jersey Shore' probably helped boost those ratings. The special 7PM airing of the Macaroni Rascals' big fight drew an audience of more than 8 million viewers. And MTV's sneak peek of its newest scripted series, 'I Just Want My Pants Back,' was seen by 5.1 million viewers, although it doesn't premiere full-time until January.
