'DWTS' Season 13 CastThe cast for 'Dancing With the Stars' Season 13 was announced last night, and the inclusion of both the show's first transgender contestant (Chaz Bono) and an openly gay man (Carson Kressley) has been applauded by the The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

As reported by 'Entertainment Weekly,' Herndon Graddick, senior of director of programs for GLAAD, said in a statement: "With both gay and transgender contestants represented on this upcoming season, ABC will send viewers a strong message about the diversity within the LGBT community."

Graddick added that, "At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture. Appearing on such a high-profile show will allow millions of Americans to get to know him in a whole new light."

Bono (née Chastity) began the female-to-male transition process in 2008 and went on to chronicle his gender reassignment journey in a candid documentary for Oprah Winfrey's OWN network. 'Becoming Chaz' aired back in May and has been nominated for three Emmy Awards.

Kressley made his name as the fashion maven on 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' and now hosts 'Carson Nation' on OWN.

He's not the first openly gay contestant on 'DWTS' -- 'N Sync singer Lance Bass competed in Season 7, a year after coming out publicly. And 'DWTS' pro dancer Louis Van Amstel, who debuted on the show in Season 1 and partnered Kendra Wilkinson last season, is also openly gay.

'Dancing With the Stars' Season 13 premieres Mon., Sept.19 at 8PM ET on ABC.

This is another example of whats wrong in this country. That thing of Cher's is a gay woman with her boobs cut off. It will never be anything else! This stunt by dancing with the stars is going to kill the show. I used to enjoy the show , but now i think its no longer a family show. I would never let a child of mine believe that this is ok. Gays should just go back in the closet where they belong. And quit trying to be accepted as normal. your not and never will be. YOU ARE FREAKS!

While this is to be applauded to some extent, it should also be booed because this show is the wasteland of talent. It means your career is over outside of this show and providing over-enthusiastic running commentary that no one really cares about on Entertainment Tonight. Chaz made a wonderful documentary and should focus his attention to the LGBTQA cause, not dancing on some ridiculous competition. However, I do agree it makes his cause more public....so, I guess it's a double-edged sword...?
