'Dancing With the Stars' Attracts Controversy for Casting Chaz Bono

by Catherine Lawson, posted Aug 31st 2011 7:30AM
Chaz Bono'Dancing With the Stars' is used to courting controversy with its casting choices, and Season 13 is already proving no exception.

Right now, much of the focus is on the inclusion of reality TV veteran -- and child of Sonny and Cher -- Chaz Bono.

Yesterday, we reported that the The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) had welcomed the addition of Bono -- the show's first transgender contestant -- as a positive step for the LGBT community.

Now, however, The Wrap reports that ABC has been attacked by some 'DWTS' fans who are not so thrilled with the casting choices, and that the 'DWTS' online message boards have been lit up with ugly, bigoted comments.

Many of the anti-Bono comments posted on the 'DWTS' message boards have targeted Bono for being transgender, but others complain that he's overweight and only on the show because of his famous parents.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Remember the furore surrounding the inclusion of Bristol Palin in Season 11? She was pilloried for being overweight and for only being included because of who her mother is.

Accused of benefiting from tactical voting by Tea Party supporters, Palin made it all the way to the finals where she was eventually beaten out by 'Dirty Dancing' star (and daughter of Oscar-winner Joel Grey) Jennifer Grey.

Each season of 'DWTS' has given fans a celebrity lineup containing a wide mix of abilities, ages and body types. (And, yes, varying degrees of celebrity-ness.)

So, how far can Bono go in 'Dancing With the Stars?' Will he stay the course, or will he be voted off early? He's certainly used to performing in front of an audience, having once pursued a music career, and as a child (then called Chastity) he was a regular performer on his parents' TV variety shows.

Bono was also previously a contestant on Season 3 of VH1's 'Celebrity Fit Club' alongside Kelly LeBrock, Young MC, Gunnar Nelson and the late Jeff Conaway, where he lost a respectable 23 lbs.

ABC had no comment on the comments posted on the 'DWTS' message boards, and the network said that Bono was unavailable to comment due to his rehearsal schedule.

'Dancing With the Stars' Season 13 premieres Mon., Sept. 19 at 8PM ET on ABC.

When did he become a star? What "starlike" has he done? Is it dancing with the stars, or dancing with the offspring of stars?

Is the show now called Dancing With The Pig? This person is a minor curiosity, but is in no way a star.

The problem here is that everyone is worried about dancing with the stars,,,american idol,,sports,,etc etc... Get your heads out of the sand people and see that our country is being taken over by a group of rulers who want to have you as a slave... They have been trying for years to have all nations under one government but now they are really close to doing just that. And all we are worried about is who will win dancing with the stars ???? omg people please wake up !!!!

I might have posted this before but, I think it's worth repeating. I don't care what sex he/she is. I just think that Chaz is too damn fat to go on that show. I've seen obese people stroke out in front of me and it ain't pretty.

If we base this strictly on the dancing (yeah, right)....
....then Chastity will be gone in a heartbeat.

Just sayin'.

Saw some of her moves on television last night and
..............wow. Whoa. MMMM. This is not good.

It's that bad.

Well, there was the criminal Tom Delay and of course, the unwed Bristol Palin who couldn't even accomplish a high school education so I would suspect that DWTS has found the controversial contestants is good for ratings.

Ebony's House :)

To the Chaz bona haters, it's a dance competion. Stick to the subject. I think u have to ask yourself the question, what is it that I don't like about me that I see in u Chaz? The sick people are the ones who takes this past the dance competion to something sexual and controversial. Get past the fact that this world is not just about closed minded people.. I will be one of the many supporting Chaz ...
