Sabrina Soto On Her New HGTV Show 'The High Low Project' and Finding Her Job on Craigslist

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 2nd 2011 12:00PM
Sabrina SotoMost people don't have tens of thousands of dollars to spend on fancy fabrics and one-of-a-kind fixtures for their homes.

Enter designer Sabrina Soto, whom you might recognize from one one of the many HGTV shows she's appeared on (most recently, as the home staging expert 'Real Estate Intervention'). In her new series, 'The High Low Project,' which premieres Sat., Sept. 3 at 8:30PM ET, Soto creates lavish rooms for homeowners on tight budgets.

But instead of breaking the bank with her designs, Soto uses the high-end furnishings as inspiration -- creating luxurious rooms that, if the homeowners approve (and really, who wouldn't), she recreates on their budget. That means $31,000 bedrooms for just $4,500 -- a fraction of the original price.

AOL TV chatted with Soto over the summer, and the designer dished on her recent move to New York, what she loves about her new gig, and how she found the HGTV job in the first place.

So tell us about your new show.
It's called 'The High Low Project.' I make some amazing design for [the homeowners] that's really expensive and over the top, and if they like it, I will recreate it for a price they can afford.

So how did you land the gig at HGTV?
I found this job on Craigslist.

Seriously?! How did that happen?
They were looking for a designer who had TV experience. I never thought it was HGTV, but I was like "Eh, I'll send it in." And Taniya [Nayak], who I work with, found her job on Craigslist too! But they don't do that anymore.

So, what's your favorite part about the new show? What's different from the stuff you've done before?
Being able to use colors, bright colors, on the wall if I feel like it -- because staging is just beige, so now I'm finally able to do what I want.

What's your house like?
I don't even have dining chairs! One of the guys came over for dinner and we sat on the floor. How embarrassing! I was like, "I'm sorry, but I just moved here and I don't have time!" He was like, "This is pathetic, nobody should know this."

I really enjoyed you on The Talk. The things that you showed for gifts for Mother's day were very creative, but I was unable to find the pamper stackable drawers on line or in hardware stores. Where should I look?

I just fnished reading the "Degerm Your Kitchen" - 7-Minute Solutions aticle in our Sunday paper Parade Magazine. Item Number 1 said to wipe down the sink -- and then pour the remainder of the quart solution of One Tablespoon of bleach mixed with one quart of water down the kitchen sink drain after wiping the sink down. Will this solution -- with the bleach -- harm our septic tank with the continued pouring this solution with the bleach -- down the drain?

I'm sure Sabrina will be her usual perky self, but the show's premise sounds a lot like 'Sensible Chic.'
