'Downton Abbey' Star Went on a Diet After Fans Called Him Fat on Twitter

Dan Stevens and Hugh BonnevilleMany actors say that they never read their press clippings for fear of seeing something negative or hurtful, but we just know that some of them go ahead and read them anyway.

Now one TV star has admitted that criticism from fans hit home, pushing him to go on a diet and lose 21 lbs.

Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley in PBS period drama 'Downton Abbey,' told 'The Daily Telegraph' that he hit the gym after he was mocked online.

"I think viewers will notice that I've lost [weight] since the first series," he said. "It's pretty much down to the fact that I had tons of comments on Twitter about how fat Matthew was looking."

"It was true," he added. "I'd put on weight. I took it as positive criticism and started back at the gym and watched what I ate."

A slimmed-down Matthew -- heir to the Downton Abbey estate -- seems more appropriate for Season 2, much of which is set during World War I. "It's a very different landscape from the manicured lawns of Downton. I spend a lot of time in the filthy trenches," Stevens said.

So, will the fact that there's less of Matthew to love adversely affect his relationship with Lady Mary? We think not. Actress Michelle Dockery told AOL TV that one constant throughout the series is the bond between Lady Mary and Matthew: "That spark has really never burned out."

'Downton Abbey' Season 2 premieres Jan. 8, 2012 on PBS.

Dan Stevens was really fat in the first few episodes of Season 1. He lost a bunch of weight in Season 2. During the Christmas finale of Season 2 he was a lot thinner and looked WAY HOT during his 2nd proposal in the snow to Lady Mary. He looked damn HOT! I'm in the USA, but watching Season 3 (PBS:YOU SUCK!!! Americans can watch the UK link for free online 4 months before you air it!). Anyways, Dan is FAT again in Season 3. His neck is way fat. He's put on a A LOT of weight-like 50 pounds since the proposal. Instead of reading 140 books Dan for the Booker Prize, he should have been working out at the gym! Dan is still very handsome, but he definitely needs to lost at least 40 pounds.

it was perfectly normal at this time period to be "fatter".

He looked very fine in his nude scenes in 'The Line of Beauty', but that was more than five years ago.

You can tell in his face he's lost weight, but one problem with S1 is they dressed him in the worse fitting clothes ever. When he's dressed in a tailored tux, he looks much thinner so it's a shame people couldn't see that on their own.
