'Toddlers & Tiaras' Mom Doesn't Understand 'Pretty Woman' Costume Controversy (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 8th 2011 7:12AM
'Pretty Woman' prostitute costume - 'Toddlers & Tiaras''Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC) has been straddling the line of uncomfortable television since its debut in 2009. But it wasn't until this week's episode that it drew the attention of the Parents Television Council.

It wasn't the padded breasts and butt in a Dolly Parton outfit worn by a 4-year old in last week's installment that got them worked up. It was little Paisley in a costume inspired by the movie 'Pretty Woman.'

More specifically, it was the costume Julia Roberts' character wore when working as a prostitute. Paisley's mother insisted that her daughter also wore a more demure dress from the movie, but that it had been edited out of the show.

One of the other mothers there said of Paisley's prostitute outfit, "Us pageant moms already take a huge rap for what we're doing to our little girls," she said. "It's outfits like that that gives us a bad rap."

She's absolutely right, and now it's that very outfit that has the PTC up in arms. Paisley's mother has come out in defense of the decision, saying she would never have considered it for a 10-year old, but for a 3-year old she thought it was comical. Also, the cut was more conservative than many other costumes.

It was a longer cut than other skirts seen on the show, but it's the idea behind the costume that's appalling to the PTC, even if Paisley doesn't understand it herself.

It didn't seem to bother most of the other pageant moms in attendance or the judging panel. Paisley won the Grand Supreme title in her age group. Maybe seeing the additional costume would have helped balance the uproar.

What do you think? Did this costume cross a line?

I think it is highly inappropriate that you people find dressing your young girls dress like this, “cute”. They look like “wanna-be-porn stars”. I am an aunty, and if I EVER saw my nieces dress anything close to this they would be locked up until college. I think you ‘woman’ need to know the difference between 4years old, and 20 yrs old. Me as a woman myself, would not even come close to dressing like this, let a lone dressing a young girl who isn’t mature enough to know its wrong.

by making a show about these mothers exploiting their children, TLC is giving the mothers the desperate, pathetic attention that they desire. it will only further more parents to do this to their children, especially when they see it could land them on tv. garbage.

It's the same with dog fighting. You think the guys attending Michael Vick's fights were against it at all?

A mother who doesn't "see" what is wrong with letting her little girl show off in such a riduculous costume probably doesn't have a healthy functioning brain in her head. I think these children should be taken away from their abusive mothers and given to mothers who will raise them in a "normal" little girl environment.

I watched this show air and I was totally embarrased. These women that live through their daughters need to be saving for their college educations. They are not natural beauties. Fake hair, fake eyelasses, fake teeth, fake makeup and now fake boobs and booties. What are they teaching their chidren. I have raised a beautiful, successful daughter and I let her be a kid as long as possible. I feel sorry for the little girls.
