'Toddlers & Tiaras' Mom Doesn't Understand 'Pretty Woman' Costume Controversy (VIDEO)
'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC) has been straddling the line of uncomfortable television since its debut in 2009. But it wasn't until this week's episode that it drew the attention of the Parents Television Council. It wasn't the padded breasts and butt in a Dolly Parton outfit worn by a 4-year old in last week's installment that got them worked up. It was little Paisley in a costume inspired by the movie 'Pretty Woman.'
More specifically, it was the costume Julia Roberts' character wore when working as a prostitute. Paisley's mother insisted that her daughter also wore a more demure dress from the movie, but that it had been edited out of the show.
One of the other mothers there said of Paisley's prostitute outfit, "Us pageant moms already take a huge rap for what we're doing to our little girls," she said. "It's outfits like that that gives us a bad rap."
She's absolutely right, and now it's that very outfit that has the PTC up in arms. Paisley's mother has come out in defense of the decision, saying she would never have considered it for a 10-year old, but for a 3-year old she thought it was comical. Also, the cut was more conservative than many other costumes.
It was a longer cut than other skirts seen on the show, but it's the idea behind the costume that's appalling to the PTC, even if Paisley doesn't understand it herself.
It didn't seem to bother most of the other pageant moms in attendance or the judging panel. Paisley won the Grand Supreme title in her age group. Maybe seeing the additional costume would have helped balance the uproar.
What do you think? Did this costume cross a line?
