Joan Collins Says She'd Love to Return for a New 'Dynasty'

by Catherine Lawson, posted Sep 9th 2011 6:50AM
Joan CollinsEarlier this year the much-vaunted 'Dallas' reboot became a reality. Now, in news to gladden the hearts of fans of shoulder-pads, sequins and shoving matches everywhere, Joan Collins has said that she'd love to return to TV for a second round of 'Dynasty,' should the opportunity arise.

And that's not all. She reportedly let slip that there may even be a script in place. According to 'The Sun,' Collins said she's been in "constant contact" with 'Dynasty' creator Esther Shapiro, "and apparently they've written a script."

But, Collins added, "I can't tell you anything about it -- it's top, top secret. ... I would love to be Alexis again because it was a great role."

Collins played the oft-married über-bitch Alexis Carrington Colby (née Morell, a.k.a. Alexis Dexter and Alexis Rowan) on the primetime soap from 1981-9.

An Aaron Spelling production, 'Dynasty' followed the lives of oil-rich Denver family the Carringtons who, despite all their vast wealth, mostly chose to live under the same roof à la the Ewings, which provided unlimited opportunities for familial conflict and intrigue.

Schapiro said that she'd been inspired by 'I, Claudius' -- itself reportedly set for an HBO remake -- the complex tale of intrigue, power struggles and bloody vengeance in ancient Rome.

The irredeemably evil -- but always impeccably dressed and accessorized -- Alexis spent most of her time smoking and hatching plots to take down ex-husband Blake (John Forsythe) and his new wife Krystle (Linda Evans). Her frequent over-the-top catfights with Krystle have become the stuff of TV legend.

The series was a modest success in its first season, but the addition of Collins and the writing team of Ellen and Robert Mason Pollock to the cast in Season 2 was credited with propelling it into the Top 20 and then the Top 10. It eventually hit the No. 1 spot in 1985.

Never afraid to take risks, the show was known for its season finale cliffhangers. The successful 1985 run was capped off with the infamous 'Moldavian Massacre' episode, in which a royal wedding in Moldavia ended in a bloodbath after gun-toting terrorists turned up and left all the major characters seemingly dead.

'Dynasty' attracted a stellar lineup for guest star and recurring roles, including screen legends Rock Hudson, Ricardo Montalban and Charlton Heston. It also launched the careers of actors like 'Heroes' star Jack Coleman and Emma Samms ('General Hospital').

However, in the late '80s the excesses of plot and wardrobe became just too much and viewers starting drifting away. ABC finally cancelled 'Dynasty' in 1989, after nine seasons. A spin-off series, 'The Colbys,' starring Charlton Heston, ran for three seasons.

Collins admits that rebooting 'Dynasty' without the late John Forsythe could be a challenge. And even though she's keen to stage a rematch, could Linda Evans be persuaded to don Krystle's epic shoulder-pads again?

Who knows? But it's certainly fun to speculate!

I hope Dynasty returns....Joan Collin's character, Alexis Carrington Colby was the greatest role
of a lifetime for her and years ahead of it's time.
Unlike Dallas, Dynasty was very female empowering......Alexis ran an oil corporation instead of
being a drunk housewife like Sue Ellen in Dallas....or being a housewife like most women were in the
1980' s in sitcoms of that time period. Alexis gave women a fictional role model....not the negative aspects,
but the positive that a woman could be more than society expected of her.
She could be a CEO of a major Corporation and if she got called a bitch for being too assertive....
she could take Alexis's cue and say "I don't give a damn darling, having money is lovely".
Today....thanks to Alexis inspiration women are CEOS.
Here's a champagne toast to Alexis, a cultural icon character.
Joan Collins and Esther Shapiro the world needs your Dynasty return.
Women have forgotten how to be classy , dress elegant.....or dream big...
as well as see real actresses at work instead of trashy reality stars like the Kardashians.
Young girls need Alexis to look up to again.....bring back glamour....the world is starving
for it.
Suggestion.....Dynasty return on cable/sat lite SOAP channel....
since Linda Evans messed up her lovely face with too much cosmetic surgery...
send in her look-a-like whom was married to Linda Evans ex hubby....he married a younger version of
Linda Evans....BO Derick. Bo Derick could physically play Crystal and Linda Evans could do the voice over.
As for Blake.... Pierce Bronson...only a guy who played James Bond...the ultimate Gentleman would do.

I'd watch it. I'd love to see Joan Collins and Linda Evans again. And Heather Locklear, Pamela Sue Martin, and Al Corely. Maybe they could add Jon Hamm as a replacement for John Forsythe-- maybe play his son or something.

They should call it "Dynasty, Queen of the Zombies". It's over, Miss Collins. Let it go.

I don't think Dynasty would work in today's economy. But if they want to bring back a show about the excessively rich, they should revive Dirty Sexy Money. That show was great until the writer's strike ruined its momentum.

I would LOOOOOOVE to see a new Dynasty with Joan Collins, Linda Evans, John James, Pamela Sue Martin (the original Fallon), Catherine Oxenberg, MIchael Nader, Pamela Bellwood.......etc. Of course it won't be quite the same without the late John Forsythe, but we REALLY need to get away from all these worthless reality shows and bring back the nighttime soaps!!
