Diane Sawyer, 'The Colbert Report'Jackie Kennedy has been elevated to an almost legendary status in the world of politics. In Diane Sawyer's new television special, 'Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words,' the former First Lady "speaks" candidly in a way people have never heard before. But Stephen Colbert was surprised by this on 'The Colbert Report' (Weeknights, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central).

"Were women allowed to have their own words back then?" he asked. "I thought their husbands could have them committed if they used their own words."

He went on to list some of the less-than-flattering descriptions Kennedy used in describing various foreign dignitaries and other famous people she met during her life.

"She has an absolute eye for human foible and she can't resist saying what she really saw," Sawyer said, going on to explain how knowing these things she was thinking really adds layers to all those photos of her smiling and shaking hands.

"It sounds like if you crossed her, she would sweep the leg," Colbert said of Kennedy.

'Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words' airs tonight, Tuesday September 13, 2011 at 9PM ET on ABC.
