'America's Got Talent' Backstage Report: Is Piers Morgan Really a Big Softie?

by Michael Maloney, posted Sep 14th 2011 7:00AM
Piers MorganThere were technical difficulties during the performance finale of 'America's Got Talent.' Some backstage doors wouldn't open, which prevented stage hands from removing PopLyfe's set and setting the stage for the Silhouettes.

Producers filled the air time with a pre-taped video segment featuring past auditions while things were corrected. By the time they were, the video segment showing insight into the Silhouettes had to be cut for time.

Those video segments usually feature touching stories about the acts, endearing them to viewers (and voters) in the process.

Will the Silhouettes lose votes and suffer because their segment wasn't shown?

"I don't think it will hurt them," judge Piers Morgan says. "They had the advantage of going last."

Lynne Waggoner-Patton, Silhouette's choreographer, says the group was thrown off-guard by the technical delay. However, thankfully it didn't affect their performance -- in fact, it may have even enhanced it.

"I was devastated for the children," Waggoner-Patton says. "But we were always feeling like the show didn't have enough adrenalin, but it got some [with the delay]. I was ready to vomit, but these kids just went out there and did it!"

So did singer Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. After he performed first in the finale judge Howie Mandel said he thought the crooner had pretty much won the competition.

"That made me feel great," Murphy says. "But it's up to America. That's what this show is about."

Fortunately, Team iLuminate didn't hear Mandel tell Murphy that he may have won before they performed. "We can't hear backstage," says Miral of iLuminate.

"I'm glad we didn't hear it," says Flipz of iLuminate. "However, we've left everything on the stage. We're 100 percent satisfied with whatever happens. There's no doubt -- Landau's amazing."

As far as Murphy's concerned, the final four are all winners. "The only way you can lose in this business is if you stop and put your head in a bucket of water," he says, "The show gives us the opportunity and now it's up to us to take advantage of that."

What happened with PopLyfe's rendition of 'We Will Rock You?'

"Sometimes when an artist starts off key they can't get it back," judge Sharon Osbourne laments. "It was just one of those nights."

Was Morgan tempted to give the young musical group a strike given that they were having an off evening? Surprisingly, no.

"I felt really sorry for them," Morgan says. "It was just too big. She missed too many notes. She got emotional and then it was over. It would have been very cruel to have buzzed them."

Wait. Morgan refraining from cruelty? Somewhere Prince Poppycock is crying, well, "Poppycock!"

Could it be that there's a softie beneath that expensively tailored suit?

"It lurks in there," Morgan dryly quips. "Somewhere, you just have to dig deep."

So, who do you think will win? Tune in for the live, two-hour season finale featuring performances by Tony Bennett, Def Leppard, Queen Latifah and Jackie Evancho.

'America's Got Talent' season finale airs tonight, Wednesday Sept. 14th at 8PM ET on NBC.

Dexter Morgan

all my votes went to Team iluminate, who are special........and a few went to Landau even though i hated the S O S song choice....would have loved to hear him sing something like THE PLATTERS "Smoke gets in your Eyes" last night.......then i would have voted for him and I/L equally....

Poplyfe "brain farted " their song choice...as soon as i heard them say Queen, i yelled....." YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS" .....

Silhouette's are ok......but should have never made the final 4..... over that Alaskan rugrat !
