Mindy Kaling Gets 'Office' Promotion to Executive Producer

Mindy Kaling, who plays the always energetic, Ryan-obsessed Kelly Kapoor on the 'The Office,' while also pulling double-duty on the writing staff, just got promoted. But she's not climbing up the Dunder Mifflin corporate ladder.

Vulture is reporting that Kaling has been promoted to executive producer on the show. Kaling, who began her 'Office' career as a writer and became a co-executive producer last year, confirmed the news by tweeting: "excited to be back, lateral lisp and all!"

There had been widespread speculation that Kaling might leave her writing role on 'The Office' to focus on developing other projects of her own. In May, 'Office' executive producer Paul Lieberstein, who plays meek 'Office' HR rep Toby, told AOL TV he wasn't sure if Kaling would be coming back in a writing role.

"She's coming back as an actress, for sure," Lieberstein told AOL TV. When pressed as to whether that meant she wouldn't be writing for the show anymore, he said, "It doesn't look that way, but I don't think that's been ... We don't know yet," before hinting at her desire to work on new projects.

And Kaling is still is focusing on her own projects as well: her reps at United Talent Agency and 3 Arts Entertainment have structured the deal so that she will also be developing a new comedy series to both write and star in.

Kaling has written some of 'The Office''s funniest episodes, including 'The Dundies' and the Jim and Pam wedding episode 'Niagara,' in addition to writing and starring in the show's 'Subtle Sexuality' Web series.

Her book 'Is Everyone Hanging Out With Me? (And Other Concerns)' is due out November 1.
