Would You Watch An All-'Simpsons' Channel?

by Chris Harnick, posted Sep 17th 2011 3:30PM
The Simpsons'The Simpsons' is popular, that's for sure, but popular enough to sustain an entire channel?

According to SlashFilm, News Corp.'s Chase Carey, the company's chief operating officer, recently discussed the possibility of a 'Simpsons' channel.

While speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media Communications & Entertainment Conference in Beverly Hills, Carey said the company has had meetings about ways to increase revenue from the long-running series while capitalizing on the show's large episode library. A digital channel has been discussed, but is far from official.

Now approaching Season 23 (premieres Sun., Sept. 25, 8PM ET on Fox), 'The Simpsons' is extremely close to producing an astounding 500 episodes.

SlashFilm did some math -- for argument's sake they decided to just work with 500 episodes of 'The Simpsons -- and with commercials, it would take 11 days before a rerun would air.

Would you watch an entire channel devoted to 'The Simpsons'?

Check out more scoop on 'The Simpsons' Season 23 and other returning shows below!

I would watch it every day. Forever.
Cable would never have been so worthy of owning.

Unrelated to the question: The show is witty and well-written, and a lot of it requires a good bit of intelligence and experience to fully appreciate.
To condemn it without ever having watched it, and especially to call all of its viewers "dummies," is a very ignorant thing to do. Everyone could learn a lesson from Barbara Bush (http://tumblr.thedailywh.at/post/10402554988/letter-of-note-of-the-day-less-than-a-year-after).

Yes, I'd watch a Simpsons channel. I'd also watch channel devoted to biographies, science fiction, history, video games, and technology, but you saw how long those niche concepts lasted. A Simpsons channel would last only as long as it took for some pinhead to be put in charge who cannot wrap his/her head around the idea of niche programming and would start looking for ways to attract a broader audience. All too soon, a Simpsons channel would air wrestling, reality shows, and Married with Children.

The one place where The Simpsons hasn't been, at least in the US, is cable. Reruns are syndicated on broadcast stations like Fox affiliates, but not cable.

I think that Comedy Central, TBS or FX would be good homes for Simpsons reruns.
