Real-Life Pan Am Stewardesses Review ABC's 'Pan Am' (VIDEO)
'Pan Am' is one of the most anticipated new shows of the fall 2011 TV season -- several AOL TV staffers gave the series a hearty "watch it!" after viewing the initial pilot -- but the show's toughest critics might actually be the women who lived 'Pan Am.'That's why AOL TV gathered a group of real-life veteran Pan Am stewardesses and sat them down to watch the 'Pan Am' premiere episode. The ladies, who all flew during the 1960s, weren't shy about sharing their opinions.
Anne Sweeney, Leslie Paine Anding, Lone Pedersen Schweitzer, Carol Cosad Young, Sheila Saunders and Gladys del Valle Picket were quick to point out that the now-PC term "flight attendants" does not apply to what they did on Pan Am.
"Oh absolutely we were stewardesses," said Leslie Paine Anding, a Pan Am stewardess from 1965-74. "I wasn't anybody's attendant, thank you very much."
And how did the fictional Pan Am of the show compare to their real lives?
"I think the main thing that stood out to me was the hair had to be above the jawline," Carol Cosad Young, a stewardess between 1966-68, said. "And that's the one thing -- a lot of us went to Vidal Sassoon in either London or New York for our haircuts and it always had to be above the jawline. It was a good cut, still a cut people still wear today."
The veteran Pan Am stewardesses we spoke to are all part of World Wings International, a philanthropic organization of former Pan Am flight attendants. Find out what else they had to say about the show in the video below, and be sure to check out the gallery featuring pictures from the ladies' personal collections and shots from the show.
