Real-Life Pan Am Stewardesses Review ABC's 'Pan Am' (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Sep 20th 2011 2:15PM
What Real- Life Pan Am Stewardesses Think of ABC's 'Pan Am''Pan Am' is one of the most anticipated new shows of the fall 2011 TV season -- several AOL TV staffers gave the series a hearty "watch it!" after viewing the initial pilot -- but the show's toughest critics might actually be the women who lived 'Pan Am.'

That's why AOL TV gathered a group of real-life veteran Pan Am stewardesses and sat them down to watch the 'Pan Am' premiere episode. The ladies, who all flew during the 1960s, weren't shy about sharing their opinions.

Anne Sweeney, Leslie Paine Anding, Lone Pedersen Schweitzer, Carol Cosad Young, Sheila Saunders and Gladys del Valle Picket were quick to point out that the now-PC term "flight attendants" does not apply to what they did on Pan Am.

"Oh absolutely we were stewardesses," said Leslie Paine Anding, a Pan Am stewardess from 1965-74. "I wasn't anybody's attendant, thank you very much."

And how did the fictional Pan Am of the show compare to their real lives?

"I think the main thing that stood out to me was the hair had to be above the jawline," Carol Cosad Young, a stewardess between 1966-68, said. "And that's the one thing -- a lot of us went to Vidal Sassoon in either London or New York for our haircuts and it always had to be above the jawline. It was a good cut, still a cut people still wear today."

The veteran Pan Am stewardesses we spoke to are all part of World Wings International, a philanthropic organization of former Pan Am flight attendants. Find out what else they had to say about the show in the video below, and be sure to check out the gallery featuring pictures from the ladies' personal collections and shots from the show.

I love PanAm....ABC would be foolish to cancel it. The storyline is both fun and dramatic. I flew from 1967-2004, with another major airline.... PanAm makes me feel as if I have my wings again even if only for one hour, one day a week. ABC, you need to give PanAm another season. The characters are great, each and everyone of them.

My dad used to work for Pan Am. We could also travel for free then.
In fact, I remember as kids, my brother and I used to go to school with identical Pan Am bags.
Now I am showing my daughter how it was then.

Please do not cancel the show

Why don't you try a better time slot? I worked for Pan Am back in the day, the stewardesses were great the food (Max/of Paris) was great, it was just a great airline. There was more, like the R&R flights from NAM, the cargo, nights in Saigon when Tan San Nhut was closed, the crews had to spend the night downtown at the Caravel Hotel, what great memories. Don't cancel Pan Am, give it another shot, i was just starting to enjoy it, but wished that it came on earlier.

I THINK THAT PAN-AM IS A GREAT SHOW. THE WAY THE WRITERS CRAFTED THE SPY STORY LINE INTO THE SCRIPT. I REMEMBER WHEN WOMEN TRAVELED THE WORLD IN SEARCH OF ADVENTURE. PLEASE RENEW THE SHOW.

I worked for Pan Am in Germany. From oct 1988 to June 14 1991. With Alert Alert Managements Systems, Inc, a Sister company of Pan Am for Security. After that I worked as a Conter Agent, and lastly before my departure Pan Am Stores. Which issued parts for the mechanics. It was a short time but I enjoyed every minute. One of the Better Airlines I've worked for.
