'The Vampire Diaries' Season 3, Episode 2 Recap

The Vampire Diaries['The Vampire Diaries' - 'The Hybrid]

Sure, 'The Vampire Diaries' plots travel at superhuman speed, but considering this was only the second episode of Season 3, there's no way Klaus was going to succeed at creating his army of werewolf-vampire hybrid slaves.

Wait, I'm sorry. "Not slaves -- soldiers. Comrades." Klaus says potato, I say semantics.

So, of course, the entire hybrid exercise was futile since the whole pack ended up dead before the full moon was over. Although Klaus did "everything he was told" (who told him these things?!) and killed a vampire, a werewolf and a doppelganger -- oh, wait, there's the problem -- instead of turning into an army of badass hybrid killers, it got really 'Trainspotting'-meets-'True Blood' up in that mountainside when the wolf-vamps started shaking like they were in heroin withdrawal and crying blood tears.

Poor Ray, the first to turn, suffered his death at the hands of Stefan (a good ol' fashioned heart-punchin', a la Elijah), and the rest of 'em were killed by Klaus or bled out.

The most important thing we can take from the entire wolf-vamp debacle is that Stefan is basically Klaus' only bro now, and despite the fact that Klaus can totes tell Stefan isn't 100 percent into this killing spree thing, he has to depend on him anyway.

Which would be okay, except for the fact that Stefan's sexy puppy-dog eyes when Klaus was telling him that he killed the doppelganger so his army totally should've worked basically gave away the fact that Elena is still alive and pouting.

The good thing about this totally untenable situation -- Klaus is gonna find out sooner or later -- is that Damon could tell Stefan wasn't beyond hope (especially when Stefan saved him from getting bitten by Ray). "I thought Stefan was gone but I was wrong," Damon told Elena that night. Of course, Damon wasn't shy about reminding Elena how much palpable sexual tension there is between them (that water scene, anyone?) so she can remember their connection when he delivers his brother back to her.

The Vampire DiariesAnother good result of a completely disastrous day: Alaric officially agreed to be Elena and Jeremy's guardian. Alaric before the were-vamp adventure, re: John Gilbert's "safe from the supernatural" ring: "Why don't you save it for future generations of stubborn, relentless baby Gilberts?" Alaric after the adventure: "Let the vampires fight that hybrid zombie mountain man. I'll take care of keeping the humans safe ... I'm keeping the ring then."

Onto the other main cliffhanger from last week's episode, the whole unfortunate "Caroline shot during her walk of shame" incident. "I've gotten myself into a bit of a vampire situation," Mama Lockwood told the mysterious, evil-seeming character of Bill, who promised to take care of things. "Let's skip the part where we pretend we don't know about the vampires in this town," Tyler told his mother before showing him he was a werewolf. "I'll make sure nothing happens to her," Mama L. told her son. "No way Jose," Bill told Mrs. L.

We didn't get much resolution during this episode regarding that "vampire situation" -- in fact, we basically got another cliffhanger when it was revealed that Evil Bill, a.k.a. the dude from 'Heroes,' is also known as Caroline's DAD. Which was more adorable: last season's "Hi mom" or last night's "Daddy"?

I really should learn to expect these types of twists, but somehow I haven't. I don't think I ever will, either.

Also last night: Jeremy and Matt continued to get bromantical, and Matt decided to believe Jer about Vicki's ghost chilling in Mystic Falls. They bonded over the fact that neither of them remember their last moments with her, then Vicki spoke to Jeremy. "I can come back. Help me come back!" But then Anna appeared and was all like "Jeremy! Don't trust Vicki!" Whom to believe? (I love them both, but something tells me to join Team Anna on this one.)

Odds and ends:

* The lake scene. Hilarious, and also sexy. Which was louder: the volume at which you screamed "KISS" at your TV screen, or the volume at which you screeched when Damon told Elena, "Okay. But we are out of here before the moon is full and I'm werewolf bait. Unless you wanna relive that whole deathbed kissy thing."?

* Quote of the night that could basically be the tagline to the entire CW lineup: "So much brooding." --Klaus to Stefan

* "You've heard of me? Fantastic." --Klaus

* Quote of the night that was amazing: "She's not a prostitute." --Tyler, to his mom, about Caroline

'The Vampire Diaries' airs Thursdays, 8PM ET on The CW.

I love this show. The twists make me squeal. And I don't squeal.
