Cee Lo Green Guests as a Hot Tub of Horrors on 'American Dad' (VIDEO)
Cee Lo Green was a revelation on the Season 7 premiere of 'American Dad' (Sun., 9:30PM ET on FOX), and that's not easy to do as a guest voice actor on an animated series. Still, we couldn't help but notice the way his unique style and sense of humor permeated every aspect of this musical experience. An obvious nod to 'Little Shop of Horrors,' the plant was replaced by a sentient hot tub voiced by Green. He lured Stan in and slowly began to take over his life. Eventually, Stan left his family behind along with his job, devoting himself entirely to the hot tub.
We loved the classic R&B video shot of Steve and Roger singing about how their father has left them, complete with rippliing muscles beneath open and billowing white shirts. As the episode progressed, we were hoping a soundtrack was going to be made available with a few extended versions of some of the tracks.
The staff revealed that this was originally intended to be the series finale when they thought 'American Dad' was going to be cancelled. That's why they followed the stage production's ending for 'Little Shop' and had the hot tub successfully kill both Francine and Stan by the end.
Cee Lo Green himself narrated the episode, complete with a few live-action interstitials between scenes to fill us in on what was going on. His animated version appeared during Stan and Francine's first joyous romp in the hot tub, before Francine rejected it and it started to get possessive of Stan.
The episode was a tremendous amount of fun, as 'American Dad's occasional forays into outright fantasy and the ridiculous usually are. Even more surprising, Roger was reduced to a straightforward child role for the duration of the episode, and his lunacy wasn't misssed in light of the strong storytelling and plot.
