Caroline Realizes Max Wasn't Crying Last Night on '2 Broke Girls' (VIDEO)
Now that we're past the pilot, which had plenty of good jokes in it, we're starting to see what kind of a show '2 Broke Girls' (Mon., 8:30PM ET on CBS) wants to be. It clearly wants Max to have a snarky retort for absolutely everything that's said to her, while Caroline is the surprisingly grounded one.Only it's not really working. Or at least, Max's constant quips are starting to wear thin. It's like she's trying to be Chandler from 'Friends,' without any of the moments of sincerity or reality that grounded him from time to time.
We get that this is a tough exterior of sarcasm she's built around her, but it's being slathered on a bit too thick. On the flip side, we're completely surprised to be liking Caroline more and more.
This week, her earnestness and innocent sincerity was actually sweet, even when misguided, like when she thought Max was crying alone in her room. That joke, while crude, was worth it if just for Caroline's impression of what Max sounded like. It's a complete reversal for how the pilot left us feeling.
We need Max to be believable in her vulnerable scenes in a way that Caroline has been. We believe Caroline has lost everything but is refusing to let it get her down. Here, Max is losing her boyfriend and yet she's more concerned with getting the fun of breaking up with him. If she doesn't feel anything, we can't feel for her or root for her.
Plus, we get it. You like coming up with clever put-downs and sarcastic responses to what people say to Max. But she doesn't need to have a snarky comeback to every ... single ... line that comes her way. Every once in a while, just let her have a real conversation. We know you're a comedy, and we applaud your commitment to the jokes, but we have to care about these characters and believe in their situation, too.
