Cathy Falters at the Marathon Finish Line on 'The Big C' (VIDEO)

'The Big C' - 'Crossing the Line'In learning to let Lee go this season, Cathy has decided to live life to the fullest while she still has it on 'The Big C' (Mon., 10:30PM ET on Showtime). In this season finale, that meant picking up Lee's plans to run in the New Year's Eve marathon.

She actually wound up picking it up quite literally, as she missed the deadline to enter, and took his number and ran it as him. But while Cathy was training for and running the marathon, she was missing some pretty serious stuff going down in the family, and this time it didn't involve Adam. In fact, Adam seems to be getting himself together.

It's Paul who's been struggling since losing his job. He started taking cocaine to keep up at his new job, then quit in a panic over a pending drug test. Meanwhile, he's been trying to fight the insurance company over a claim they approved and then denied.

All of this stress and Paul's health wasn't the best to begin with. We found out how serious it was in a heartbreaking final scene.

As Cathy was closing in on the finish line, she saw Adam and Sean there. Even Dr. Mauer showed up to support her, despite advising against her running. Then, Lee's spirit arrived to thank her, followed by a supportive Marlene. Even the dead were there for her.

As he promised, despite a busy schedule, Paul showed up at the last minute and Cathy declared as she neared them that she was so happy that everybody came to see her finish.

"Yeah, except Dad's not here yet," Adam said, turning to look right where Cathy saw Paul standing. It was then that she, and we, realized that Paul was here just as Lee and Marlene were here.

We cut to see paramedics working on getting Paul's heart started, so maybe it's just a near-death experience, and he'll pull through. 'The Big C' has already been renewed for a third season, so the show will go on with or without him. Do you think Cathy is going to have to forge ahead with yet another tragic loss in her life?

Arrrgh. This season was mostly 'miss' for me but now I'm going to be sucked into watching the next season, just to see what's up with Paul.

Wow, sure didn't see that coming. I hope that Paul pulls through. Great comedic talent there. Where was Andrea last night.
