'Law & Order: SVU' Tackles Male-on-Male Sexual Abuse in 'Personal Fouls'

by Chris Harnick, posted Sep 27th 2011 3:00PM
Mariska HargitayThe second episode of 'Law & Order: SVU' Season 13 is one for the TV history books. Not only does it feature guest stars Dan Lauria, Mechad Brooks, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh, but it'll also tackle the taboo issue of male-on-male sexual violence.

In 'Personal Fouls,' a basketball coach known as a trusted mentor and figure in the community comes under suspicion of molesting a number of his players.

"This script was very exciting and I think the cast felt honored and excited to be able to talk about this issue because obviously sexual violence is something people are scared to talk about," series star Mariska Hargitay said at a recent press event on the 'SVU' set.

Hargitay's The Joyful Heart Foundation, Wolf Films, NBC, 1in6 and A Call to Men are partnering in an effort to raise awareness about male-on-male sexual abuse.

"It takes so much courage to come forward and male-on-male sexual violence is even more swept under the carpet," she said. "The statistics are frightening."

According to statistics from 1in6, an organization that seeks to help male sexual abuse survivors, 19 million men in the United States are victims of sexual abuse.

"It's exciting to do a show about it because obviously when things are on TV somehow they're made OK to talk about and that's been exciting."

The partnerships between the organizations hope to spread awareness about the subject. Hargitay said one of the objectives is to "let male survivors know they're not alone and there are so many people that want to help them."

"It's not a shameful secret that you should keep to yourself, that the blame belongs with the perpetrator, not the survivor," she said.

'Law & Order: SVU' airs Wednesdays, 10PM ET on NBC

I watched a Law & Order in reruns this week that was a few years old that dealt with this subject. It was about sexual violence by a male frat member to a male pledge.

This show and all Law & Order shows are RACIST, they only show a white person doing the crime.

Haha! I have religiously watched L&O from the start. SVU I have watched the last 5 years. You would have to have been living under a rock to make that statement. They spread it around. They have criminals from all backgrounds. Obviously you havent watched enough episodes. How can I make this statement? Because the shows are based in NYC? DUH. I would really advise you to watch more shows. or buy a color TV.

Am I the onlyone tired of hearing about gays and "It's because I am black"? I swear you turn on the tv or your computer and that is all you see. Enough is enough. I don't care about your sex life or the reason you got 15 years in jail because your mother says you are a good boy and made a simple mistake for the 15th time.

Jerry i would not deny you your opinion ever. But the article was about molestation. Molestation has nothing to do with sexual orentation. Follow along! If you dont like things on your computer or TV about Gay life, turn the station and stop surfing Gay Porn Sites!

I love this show. Unfortunately, right now I can't get this on my tv. Our digital antenna was hit by lightning a couple of months ago...so we are limited to three networks...PBS, FOX, and ABC...I am missing ALL of CBS' new season shows...CSI, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, etc.
I get reruns of these shows on FOX at 9pm CST...like watching them, how ever I can get them.

No surprises here. Just another television show participating in the mainstreaming of vulgarity all for the sake of attracting more paying customers for the products sold at commercial breaks. Disgusting.

I have read all the comments on the site, I have one last commet, the people that think that this isn't and issue in America or that this is a "gay"ssue need to read on the subject. A good place to start is by reading a book called Abused Boy's, this should open a few pople eyes and hopefully their minds as well. We have a huge problem in America, we need to face this issue. Male sexual abuse is as prvalent as male to female sexual abuse when it comes to men with a child, yet we are outraged when it is our daughter's or grand daughter's but if it is our son's we are embrassed and ashamed. We let the abuse continue and push the dirty little secret under theperverbial rug because we as adults we are to embrassed to talk about the issue, well tell this to the 93,000 boys that are being sexually abused this year, why this show wasn't important to them, why you didn't care enough to watch the show, why you didn't care enough to be outraged at the abuse.

In Germany during the 1940's a Catholic priest wrote, I didn't look when they when they took children away, I remained silent when they put up their signs, I did nothinng when they took my neighbor, a jew away, when they came for me their was no one left to help.

I applaud the cast and the producers for attaching this sensitive subject head on, and bringing the ugly topic to like, I can only hope they take the tie at the end of the show to tell the statistic's that go along with the topic, lets enlighten America, not keep us in the dark.

Your are right. Abuse is abuse, no matter WHO is the one being abused. IT IS WRONG!!!! It NEEDS to be brought to the surface so others can come forward and report any abuse. People need to be made aware.

The second show is so important, what most people in America do not know is that male to male sexual violence happens to 1 in 6 young men. The abuse goes unreported because as children we are taught that it isn't abuse and to "suck it up." This year alone there will be approximately 93,000 boys under the age of 13 that will be molested by someone they know and trust, many of these young boys with have over 100 contacts in theire life time with the same pertatrator. This violence will affect every aspect f thier life, how they think, how they view marriage, their sexuality, their veiws on women, work and how they respond to other men. It will take years of theraphy to over come the abuse and they will never live without the nightmare or the dreams. This is America's dirtiest secret-thank you for bringing it to light.

I've watched Law and Order SUV for many years. I've also hoped for all of those years that they would replace Hargitay and Meloni, I cannot stand either of them. Hopefully now that Meloni is gone Hargitay will soon follow. However with the injection of more and more Liberal B.S., I may have to stop watching.
