Hope, Famous TV Bear, Killed by Hunter in Minnesota

by Alex Moaba, posted Sep 29th 2011 1:00PM
Sad news for animal lovers: Hope, a black bear cub whose early life was chronicled in the BBC documentary 'The Bear Family and Me' and Animal Planet's 'Bearwalker of the Northwoods' has been killed by a hunter in Minnesota, according to a report in the BBC.

Hope's birth had been broadcast over the Internet by biologist Lynn Rogers. Later, wildlife filmmaker Gordon Buchanan filmed Hope as she was separated from and eventually reunited with her mother Lily.

It is believed that Hope was shot and killed in an area of Minnesota where hunting bears is legal. Hunters are discouraged from shooting bears who are wearing tracking collars, but Hope was the only member of her family not to be wearing one.

In this clip, Buchanan feeds Hope after she's been separated from her mother:

@ pepper, Many ways to cook bear. Bear burgers are great, as are steaks, tenderloins etc. Just about anyway one can make beef one can do bear. Marinade it for a few hours or a day in terriaki, its very good, or you can roast it in a crock pot.. The people who bash it either a) have never eaten it b) ate meat that was not properly cared for or c) had over cooked meat, which will ruin any wild game.

@ Andrew Chadwick, what bear meat recipes do you know of? I have never heard of anyone eating bear meat.

Im sure all the commenters never stepped foot into the woods. This hunter, just like every other law abiding hunter pays for conservation...What do you think the hunting license fee gos to. Bear hunting is WAY more that throwing bait out and waiting for it to come by, way more work goes into it than that. This bear is no different than any other bears legally killed. The bear was not killed for "Glory" It was killed for food, just like that burger you may have eaten last night. The only difference is this food was not raised in a 4x8 pen and force fed antibiotic drugs. It will be eaten by a family who needed the food and the hunter had no way of knowing it was a research bear. It was not shot in a game preserve, but in the Woods where it is perfectly legal to hunt. As a hunter and fisherman I pay my respects and appreciation to any animal I chose to harvest. I feel sorrow for every animal I take, and I, nor any other real hunter do not hunt for blood lust...All you city dwellers who have never lived in the woods amongst animals can feel bad, but nothing sets this bear apart from any other wild animal that is killed, b hunter, car or natural causes. The media needs to stop blowing this out of proportion, it was not a pet but a wild animal with a legal hunting season. If it weren't for hunters there would be no conservation, almost all conservation groups are started and funded by hunters.

Okay this video is depressing. I'm sorry, I highly doubt this douche was hunting for food or gives his "hard earned" money to help conservation. This bear was killed because it had the misfortune to run into a useless, creepy idiot of a human being. End of story.

yes, the young age of this bear killed bothers me most of all, not even on the planet two years...

Huh? Your comment makes no sense. What does "limet" mean? Why is a past-tense form of the verb "to be" included at all in that second, um, phrase thingy (I hesitate to call it a sentence, as it bears little to no resemblance to an actual sentence).

And be heavy fine? Do you perhaps mean "heavily fined"? Why are you using an adjective to modify a verb (albeit a verb in an inappropriate tense)?

Baiting is NOT hunting. Baiting is for some candyass afraid to really hunt or for some chickenshit guide out to make a dollar. please DO NOT ASSOCIATE THESE PEOPLE WITH REAL HUNTERS.

When men used to hunt to survive, it made sense...but for the pleasure of KILLING!! It´s a cruel practice and I suggest that hunters should start a new game. Instead of paint ball, they should open the season and shoot themselves.

i wonder how it feels to kill something that wants to live....the lack of empathy in hunters, its just astounding that this exist in people, slaughterhouse workers not exempt....look at that ted nugent, he shoots an animal and laughs as it squeals in pain.....
i guess some folks were raised without the ethics of "do unto others" , of course we know how they would feel being hunted, injured and killed

"...its just astounding that this exist in people,"

Did you also sleep through subject-verb agreement class? Why is everyone who posts comments incapable of constructing even the most basic of correct English sentences? (Let's not even get into the idiotic misuse of "its" instead of "it's.")

In the hunting circlles, this guy is know as a "Girly Bambie Hunter" by real hunters . Anyone who has to use bait and can't tell the difference from collered or a juvenile animal should not be alowed to own a gun let alone allowed to hunt. Hope I don't see this Neanderthal out in the woods.
