Suspicious Letter Sparks 'Dancing With the Stars' Security Alert
A suspicious letter containing an unidentified white powder sparked a massive security alert at CBS studios in Hollywood Wednesday afternoon.TMZ reports that police were called in after the letter, which was addressed to 'Dancing With the Stars,' was discovered in the mailroom of CBS Television City around 2PM PT.
LAPD spokesman Richard French told the Associated Press that no one was exposed to the white powder and no injury was reported.
A hazardous materials team gathered and tested the powder before declaring it harmless.
CBS spokesman Chris Ender wouldn't comment on what security precautions would now be taken, and he said of the safety scare: "Outside of mail room operations being suspended for a few hours, no business operations or show productions were affected."
It's not the first time a letter containing white powder has sparked a security alert at 'DWTS.' A section of the Television City studio complex was evacuated last November after an envelope containing an unknown substance -- later identified as talcum powder -- was mailed to then-contestant Bristol Palin.
Last month, another TV show was targeted in the same way. Craig Ferguson's 'Late Late Show' received an envelope mailed from overseas, which contained a threatening letter and white powder. That time, the powder turned out to be corn starch, and after police had investigated the show was allowed to tape as normal.
In the days following 9/11 the U.S. was rocked by news that a suspicious powder contained in letters sent to news organizations in New York City and Florida, had been identified as the potentially lethal anthrax. Five people died after being exposed to the spores and 17 other people became sick.
