'Dexter' Season 6 Premiere Recap: Creepy Religious Murders and a High School Reunion

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 2nd 2011 10:35PM
Season 6 of 'Dexter' jumped forward a year, with Lumen out of the picture and America's favorite serial killer of serial killers back in the swing of things. By back in the swing of things, we mean of course, back to swinging his blade against Miami's murderers and criminals.

In one of the opening scenes, Dexter traps two first responders who had been killing patients and shocks them to death, proving why TV doctors must always yell, "Clear!" before using a defibrillator. Later, at a high school reunion, he tracks a jock who killed his wife, and after some flag-football forensics, introduces him to his table, too.

The rest of the episode took us to Dexter's 20-year high school reunion and introduced a pair of creepy, religiously inspired serial killers. Read more about the premiere after the jump.

While Dexter's back to his old routine, some things have changed in the Miami Metro Homicide Unit. La Guerta and Batista have gotten divorced, and she secures a promotion to captain by black-mailing Deputy Chief Matthews with the black book of the "Miami Madam." Masuka is teaching a college forensics class, and the specter of students calling him Professor adds to his signature brand of comic relief. Quinn is acting weird, but as we later learn, it's because he's planning to propose to Deb.

Dexter has a new nanny for Harrison, Jaime, Angel Batista's little sister, who likes to walk around his apartment in skimpy clothes. On Angel's recommendation, Dexter's looking at a Catholic pre-school for Harrison, which forces him to think about religion, even though he prefers his own set of principles.

The religion sub-plot proves to be a thematic foil for this season's new villains, a twisted religion professor and his pupil, played creepily by Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks. We don't know much about them yet, except their sick signature. Hanks' character disembowels a guy working at a fruit-stand with a long, almost-wooden looking blade, stuffs his stomach cavity with snakes and stitches an alpha-omega into his stomach before dumping him in the ocean so he would wash up on the shore. Murderers with a code of their own, these two look like they'll make worthy adversaries for Dexter this season.

The high school reunion gave us the episode few funny moments. "I've never seen someone dissect a fetal pig as fast as you!" Dexter's former bio lab partner beams when he sees him. Basking in his new-found popularity because of his cool job and the sad headlines after Rita's death, Dexter lets himself have a good time, parties it up and even gets a science-room BJ from the prom-queen. "I have no idea what Hammer time is, or how it differs from regular time," our mal-adjusted hero poignantly laments on the dance-floor.

Love the 'creep-factor' in Dexter but Showtime waits SO long between the seasons that i always feel as though i have to get re-acquainted with the show.

I thought it was a fantastic start; a reboot almost. Of course, using a scoreboard for the jock's dispatch table was completely over the top, but, after all these are fictional characters. The baby snakes really upped the ick factor, too
