'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index: Vultures Circle Atlantic City After Nucky's Arrest

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 3rd 2011 1:45PM
There's a lot of plotting and scheming happening on 'Boardwalk Empire.' The vultures are circling Atlantic City after Nucky Thompson's been charged with election fraud and betrayed by his inner circle.

The show's milieu of gangsters are all making their moves to exploit the new power vacuum. To keep track of the deals, death and deception, we're here to provide 'The Boardwalk Empire' gangster index, a guide to the politics of 'Boardwalk''s organized crime scene.

Check out whose stock, and power, is up and down after Episode Two's developments.

Stock down: Nucky Thompson
Arrested for election fraud, Nucky's been isolated by the ward bosses, his brother and his surrogate son. Then again, he landed a new security guard from Sinn Fein (shown), who we have a feeling might be sent on a mission to dispatch the State's Attorneys two key witnesses. If Furio from the 'Sopranos' is any indication, foreign gangster security guards tend to be ruthless ... and enjoy flirting with the boss' wife.

Stock up: Margaret Schroeder
Margaret went straight gangster by saving Nucky's cash and ledger book from the State's Attorney, and admonished him to never write anything down again. It was like Wee-Bey yelling at D'Angelo to "Never talk on the phone in the car!" on 'The Wire.'

Stock up: Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky
These two New York proteges of Arnold Rothstein have decided to get into the heroin trade. "Once you run the numbers, it becomes very attractive," Lanksy beamed. They'll trade Darmody heroin for booze, and everyone can get rich. And high as a kite.

Stock up: Jimmy Darmody
Getting robbed at gunpoint outside a poker game, Darmody knifed two New York gangsters with chilling efficiency. Don't mess with this dude or you may find yourself bleeding out into a fountain.

Stock down: Police Chief Eli Thompson
He may be on the winning team for now, but betraying your brother rarely ends well ... just ask Fredo from 'The Godfather.' Nucky gave him one last chance to walk it back, but he chose instead to "twist the knife" and drink whiskey with The Commodore's old friends (which included 'Sopranos' vet Dominic Chianese -- Uncle June! -- sporting some awesome mutton chops).

Stock up: Chalky White
As if he needed any more street cred, Chalky White showed again just how cagey, disciplined and brutal he can be. He pretended to be able to read and slow-played that he had three trusted bodyguards watching his back, then showed his jailhouse rival that he's not to be messed with.

What do you think of this season of 'Boardwalk' so far? And whose side are you on?

Love It. Great shout out yo Uncle Ju (I am glad he got over that Alz from the Sopranos). Have ordered the book on which the show is based. Want to see how close they follow each other. Just waitin' on Nucky's revenge
