Laura Dern Previews 'Enlightened' & Talks About Acting With Her Mom (VIDEO)

by Stephanie Opella, posted Oct 3rd 2011 6:00PM
Laura Dern visited 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) to talk about her upcoming HBO series 'Enlightened,' in which she plays a high-powered executive that has a powerful epiphany following a nervous breakdown. She showed a clip where her character, Amy Jellicoe, is in the midst of a breakdown, prying open elevator doors to threaten a co-worker.

Dern has been working on her 'breakdown' face for a while, going all the way back to 1986 and her role in 'Blue Velvet.' In that film, her character had her own breakdown, crying silently with her mouth wide open. Add tears and streaming mascara and you have the poster for 'Enlightened.'

Dern also talked about working with her real-life mother, Diane Ladd, who plays her mother Helen Jellicoe in the show. Dern said that Helen is "a very restrained character that doesn't know how to embrace," although in real-life, she and her mother share everything. In fact, they recently shared receiving Hollywood Stars, along with Bruce Dern, Laura's father, all on the same day.
