Hugh Hefner and the PTC Speak Out on 'The Playboy Club' Cancellation

by Catherine Lawson, posted Oct 5th 2011 6:00AM
'The Playboy Club' castAs was widely expected, NBC's new drama, 'The Playboy Club,' has gained the dubious distinction of being the first cancellation of the new fall season.

It will reportedly be replaced with repeats of 'Prime Suspect' until Brian Williams' news magazine series 'Rock Center' starts on Mon., Oct. 31 at 10PM.

Now 'Playboy' founder Hugh Hefner says he thinks he knows why 'The Playboy Club' struggled in the ratings and failed to ignite with audiences.

Saying that fans of the show are "really upset" about the cancellation, Hefner Tweeted that "I'm sorry NBC's 'The Playboy Club' didn't find it's audience. It should have been on cable, aimed at a more adult audience."

A sentiment perhaps the Parents Television Council would agree with. The PTC mounted an aggressive campaign for months, urging advertisers and NBC affiliates to drop 'The Playboy Club.'

In a statement, PTC President Tim Winter thanked supporters and said he is "pleased" at the cancellation. "Bringing 'The Playboy Club' to broadcast television was a poor programming decision from the start," said Winter. "We're pleased that NBC will no longer be airing a program so inherently linked to a pornographic brand that denigrates and sexualizes women."

Echoing Hefner's thoughts that 'The Playboy Club' may have been more suitable for a cable channel rather than a broadcast network, Winter added that "we are hopeful those making programming decisions will consider more carefully the difference between the publicly-owned broadcast airwaves and a subscription service like cable."

Still it's not all bad news for Hefner. His fictional TV life may be over for now, but he Tweeted that a movie could be in the offing: "At the same time, there is renewed studio interest in a major motion picture on my life & the start of the Sexual Revolution." Sounds intriguing.

Which new show do you think should join 'The Playboy Club' in cancellation corner?

I watched the first episode of Playboy Club and recorded the rest hoping to watch them as a marathon. Now they say it's cancelled so there's no reason for me to bother with the other recordings since the story is going nowhere. I don't know about other people's tastes, but I thought this show had a chance.

"a program so inherently linked to a pornographic brand that denigrates and sexualizes women" --- the show isn't about pornography! it's about the playboy CLUB.. and it's a good friggen show. while i would never say it's right for girls to be ****** and sleep with whoever they want, a woman has all the right to show her sexy side.. no girl nowadays walks around with a turtle neck and long skirts. playboy doesn't sexualize women.. women choose to be a part of it. they're not being forced into it.

this PTC is making me sick to my stomach with their remarks and views on the show. this is 2011.. not 1940! the world isn't filled with unicorns and rainbows.. they're so worried about what's the the tv and how it will affect children, if you don't want your child to see something.. dont let them see it! but if they don't see it on tv, they're learning about it in the real world.

Playboy Club cancelled?... colour me not surprised ! ~ After watching the premiere episode for 10 mins or so, right up until one poor, helpless Bunny had to fend off her would be 'mobster' attacker by putting her 3 inch heel thru his carotid artery ~ result ~ DEAD !! ~ for both the 'attacker' and the show!

Forget about finding a cable network, altho it's not a bad idea, how about finding better writers??

Tim Winters preaches that women can only be objects when he says it demeans them (in Playboy) as if they (we) have no minds and men can only 'use' and rule over us and we must all boo hoo and NOT LIKE SEX or OURSELVES! His wife, if he has one, must NOT LIKE SEX! THAT"S IMMORAL!!!! That means he is USING HER. There is a difference to being used and having equal love. If he doesn't know love then it is the OTHER~! He wants to keep up the horrible ways that women should NEVER like sex just because some haven't made it well enough or found the right person yet by being opposed to REAL ADULT CONFIDENT FULL WOMEN who are equal and pedestaled...pretty women soften men and they clean up or become less violent and peaceful...it's what we can be good at...again, Tim thinks women have no minds, (or say so or choices or know and seek love just like men) - objects that is, no matter what...Odd he is apart of parenting council...Still hope he will see the light and grow someday anyway - some people think that their way is the only way - 'plain'.............

Damn it all! After only three episodes, the new TV series, "The Playboy Club" was just cancelled. I thought it was really well done. It had plenty of intrigue, was well cast and acted, and frankly, quite classy.

I refused to watch "Pan Am," however.
