Is 'Reno 911!' Making a Comeback?

by Catherine Lawson, posted Oct 7th 2011 6:15AM
'Reno 911' Season 1 castTime to dust off those tight shorts and polish your nightstick: Jim Dangle and the crew could be coming back!

Hot on the heels of a possible 'Arrested Development' revival, we hear that 'Cops' parody 'Reno 911!' could also be in line for resurrection.

According to Vulture, Netflix and the show's producers are in talks about producing new episodes. But don't get too excited: There are a lot of obstacles to get past before it could become reality.

But just how great would it be if it actually happened? And is there a full-on Noughties revival building in the world of TV?

'Reno 911!' ran for six seasons on Comedy Central before being cancelled back in 2009. The mockumentary style comedy follows the adventures of bumbling Lt. Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) and his team in the fictional Reno Sheriff's department. It spawned an official movie spin-off -- 'Reno 911!: Miami' -- and an unofficial porn flick.

With minimal scripted dialog, the cast was almost exclusively made up of improv vets from comedy groups like The State, The Groundlings, and Upright Citizens Brigade.

The show's cancellation came just short of the number of episodes needed for a lucrative complete syndication package, and producers Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher have been talking to Netflix after they discovered that the show remains a popular title for customers.

However, no deal's been struck yet with the show's co-creators and stars Lennon, Robert Ben Garant and Kerri Kenney-Silver. Who's to say that they'll even be interested in donning the uniforms again?

Plus, before anything can happen Comedy Central -- which owns the copyright -- would have to agree to let Neflix air new episodes exclusively.

However, there is one aspect that would make it easier to reach a deal: Cost. Former 'Reno 911!' executive producer John Landgraf told Vulture that "The show is exceptionally cheap to produce. So the financial structure of a deal, which is usually the hardest thing, ironically, may actually be the easiest."

Are you excited about the idea of more 'Reno 911!'? What other 2000-2010 cancelled shows do you want revived?
