It was the final rounds of Boot Camp this week on 'The X Factor' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX). In two hours, we burned through the last of the group performances, watched their final chances to impress, witnessed the contestants finding out which 32 made it to Judges' Houses, and saw as the judges found out which groups they would be mentoring.

It was a packed night of television for sure, and yet there was still time for some great vocal performances. For sure, this season features some true vocal powerhouses. And when it came time to make their final decisions, the judges had a couple more surprises up their sleeves.

After announcing their decisions, there were only six in the groups category. So, as they've done in recent seasons internationally, the judges called back 14 contestants from the Boys and Girls categories. They then created a group from four girls, and threw the other 10 into a group. Not sure how that's going to work, but they have a lifeline into the next round.

Then, it was time for the judges to find out who they will mentor. Nicole Scherzinger got the Over-30s, which seemed to come as a surprise to her. Paula Abdul was actually a little overwhelmed when she heard she had the Groups, while LA Reid was so satisfied with the Boys, he gave a classic evil villain laugh.

Simon Cowell, on the other hand, decided that the news he was mentoring the Girls was even better news for them than it was for him. After all, who wouldn't want Simon, right?
