Why It's Time for Chaz Bono to Leave 'Dancing With the Stars'
Before you decide to hate me, hear me out. I was truly anticipating Chaz Bono's domination on the dance floor this season on 'Dancing With the Stars.' I was rooting for him, and not because of the controversy but because he seemed like he was having a great time in the ballroom. But then that changed -- and so did my allegiance. It's hard not to be captivated by dancers like J.R. Martinez and Ricki Lake, both of whom have shown incredible natural dancing ability over the past few weeks. Chaz, meanwhile, seems to have lost his early sizzle. He looks like he's bored, confused and in pain most of the time. And where's the entertainment in that?
That's not to say that Chaz hasn't stepped out of his comfort zone and pushed himself these past three weeks, because he has, but I can't help but feel like keeping him on 'DWTS' is unfair to the other contestants -- and the viewers. So I'm just going to say it: It's time for Chaz to go. Here's why.
1. Chaz and Lacey are painful to watch together. Watching Chaz and Lacey Schwimmer every week, I can't help but grimace at their obvious distaste for each other. There is absolutely no chemistry between these two people. Seriously, I thought Elisabetta and Val were bad, but at least they had the excuse of an actual language barrier. Lacey just looks like she wants nothing more than to be put out of her misery. It would be one thing if she had the patience of Anna Trebunskaya, but she doesn't, and Chaz and Lacey might just go down as the most awkward 'DWTS' couple ever.
2. He's in pain! During week-two rehearsals, Chaz suffered a knee injury, and watching him grimace in pain during every dance makes me wonder how much more he can take. Is the Mirror Ball really worth permanently damaging your body? Earth to Chaz: Your health is more important than some reality competition.
3. He has two left feet. In week one, Chaz came out strong, looked happy and danced an effortless cha cha. It wasn't the best of the night, but it wasn't the worst. And he looked excited. But then he lost his momentum -- and his sparkle. While the other contestants showed growth, he got worse. I'm not sure he's retaining anything -- and my guess is he feels the same way. Chaz has been at the bottom of the leaderboard for two weeks, and if this were any sort of legitimate contest, he would be gone.
It's time for Chaz to face the ballroom music. Not everyone can be a dancer. I definitely can't cha cha to save my life. I've accepted it, and now it's time for Chaz to do the same.
4. It's a painfully obvious popularity contest. Last week's shocking elimination sealed it. By sending Kristin Cavallari home, 'DWTS' lost whatever credibility it may have had as a dance competition. Instead, it appears to be nothing more than a popularity contest. By keeping Chaz on the show, 'DWTS' is clearly sending a message to viewers: "We don't care about the dancing!"
The other contestants must be wishing they, too, had pop icons for mothers, since it's obvious that tonight's Cher appearance is the only thing that saved saved Chaz from elimination last week. (I should mention that Chynna Phillips's father, John Phillips, was a rock icon of the 1960s, but he died in 2001.) What's next? Cher promises to release a new single if Chaz makes it to next week?
If J.R. Martinez or Chynna Phillips goes home before Chaz, I might have to give up on 'DWTS' for good.
