Helen Confronts the Real Jack the Ripper on 'Sanctuary' (VIDEO)

'Sanctuary' - 'Tempus'In last season's finale of 'Sanctuary' (Fri., 10PM ET on Syfy), Helen Magnus followed Adam Worth through a time portal. In the premiere, she landed in 1898 London, where Adam was hoping to use modern technology to cure his daughter of a blood disease.

Helen was more concerned with disrupting the time stream, not only if Adam succeeded, but if either of them interacted with their past selves -- as both of them were around back then as well. In fact, the show did have a couple of scenes where both of their selves nearly crossed paths.

For the most part, though, it was a fairly straightforward adventure with Adam trying to save his daughter's life, and Helen trying to stop him. She failed, but Imogene died anyway. In fact, she died at the hands of her father when he was trying to shoot Helen. In turn, Helen killed him.

Along the way, she encountered a crazed John Druitt, who didn't realize she was from the future. It was the time in his life when he was suspected of being Jack the Ripper, and though we thought it was him possessed by some energy entity, it turns out it was a mutant with quite literally a "Spring-Heel."

In an interesting wrinkle at the end, when Helen realized there was no way for her to return home, her friend and ally in both eras, James -- and the only guy who figured out she was from the future -- told her the easiest way to go back to her time. Simply wait for it.

Helen is already more than 100 years old, and there's no reason to assume she won't just go on living. She need only wait until the Helen Magnus of the future travels back into the past, and then she can step in and pick up her life.

That means next week, when we return to the present, we can see how 113 years of solitude/vacation have impacted the Helen we've come to know, and whether or not anything she and Adam did in the past had an impact on the timeline.

Sadly, I didn't realize Sanctuary had even returned! Fortunately, Amazon helped me catch up.

I found this episode mostly disappointing. I never liked the Adam Worth character and I'm not sure I like the path the series has set for going forward. I do think it will be interesting to see how 118 years of seclusion will affect Helen, both physically and mentally. Helen isn't immortal, she just ages very slowly.

It will be interesting to discover if Helen was able to seclude herself enough to keep history from being affected and what it will do to her. She's know lived the late 19th century, the 20th century, and the early 2st century twice. That's got to have some impact on a person.
