Is Scary Redneck Merle Returning to 'The Walking Dead'?

Merle Dixon, 'The Walking Dead'The return of 'The Walking Dead' is just days away and ahead of the Season 2 premiere we hear a rumor that scary redneck Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) may also be returning.

Norman Reedus, who plays Merle's almost equally scary younger brother Daryl, told TV Guide that an upcoming episode (airing Nov. 13) will revolve around his character.

"It's pretty much all Daryl on his own, in a hard-core man-versus-world psychological [quest] with inner turmoil and hints of 'Deliverance.'"

So where does Merle fit in? Reedus says that "You'll learn about [Daryl's] family and what it was like for him growing up, constantly put down and under the thumb of other people. You'll see him make some hard decisions and announce where his loyalties lie."

Merle is a tough-as-nails survivor of the zombie apocalypse who hooked up with Rick Grimes and the gang in the second episode of Season 1. We last saw Merle handcuffed to a pipe on the rooftop of an Atlanta department store after he viciously beat on fellow survivor T-Dog.

Although T-Dog magnanimously went back to save Merle he fumbled it by dropping the keys to the handcuffs into a vent. As Merle is left up on the roof alone, with the almost certain fate of becoming an entree for the fast-approaching zombie horde we see him eyeing a nearby hacksaw.

Now, if anyone's going to hack off their hand to escape being eaten it's Merle, and when Daryl and the others go back for him all they find up on the roof is his hand, the bloody handcuffs and a bloody hacksaw. Some zombies with bashed-in heads and a missing van suggest that Merle escaped, but Daryl and fans were left hanging, as he didn't reappear in Season 1.

So will be the November 13 episode be the one where Merle comes back and goes medieval on the others? Reedus teases that "As much of an ass as Merle is, he's still my big brother. But if I knew he was coming back, I couldn't tell you."

'The Walking Dead' Season 2 premieres Sunday, Oct. 16, 9PM ET on AMC.
