'The Simpsons' Gets Renewed, But Will Season 25 Spell the End?

by Chris Harnick, posted Oct 10th 2011 11:35AM
The SimpsonsAfter teetering on the edge of cancellation, 'The Simpsons' has gotten a two season renewal from Fox. But, will these be the final two seasons of America's longest-running scripted series? According to 'Simpsons' executive producer Al Jean, no.

"Believe me, we don't look at this as these will definitely be the last two [seasons]," Jean told Entertainment Weekly. "We just want to keep fighting and go as long as we can ... We really feel this isn't an end but a beginning. It's a cliché, but it's the truth."

The studio and actors settled their salary dispute -- Fox wanted to cut their salaries by 45 percent and the cast wanted a share of the merchandising and syndication profits -- and the show was renewed.

During the heated contract stalemate, producers accepted pay cuts to keep the show going, but the actors held out. Harry Shearer, the voice of Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders and Principal Skinner, among others, said he was willing to accept an even steeper salary cut if it meant getting a share of the back end profits that could account for billions of dollars for Fox. The studio said no.

"I'll let it speak for itself, though my personal view is the actors are extremely valuable," Jean said, referring to Shearer's statement. "They are brilliant, they are the characters, which means they possess an irreplaceable commodity. And because of that, they deserve to participate in the success of the show, and I think they do."

Look for a special promo thanking fans for their support to air on Fox.

"The silver lining is that people cared," Jean said. "The viewers are obviously the reason this has happened."
