Amy Goes From Enraged to 'Enlightened' in Series Premiere (VIDEO)

'Enlightened' - 'Pilot'It was an abrupt emotional turnaround in the opening minutes of 'Enlightened' (Mon., 9:30PM ET on HBO). When we first meet Amy (Laura Dern) she is in full meltdown mode, ranting and raving and looking a lot like Jack Nicholson in 'The Shining.'

A quick cut later and she's been enjoying an enlightening and calming experience in Hawaii and is now ready to return to her old life, whether they want her or not. A quick threat of a lawsuit if she isn't rehired means a very awkward first day, but that's for next week's episode.

This week was about being enlightened in a cynical world, which is a very interesting platform for the show to take. We have become very jaded as a society, and the Amy that returns from Hawaii immediately doesn't fit in with her cutthroat business world, or even with her emotionally distant mother.

Likely, the series will follow along as Amy tries to be this new person in the same old world. Will she succeed, and maybe inspire others to find a more enlightened way of life? Or will she find herself trying to rip open a set of elevator doors down the road a bit?

In a way, her journey is like a grand experiment, and it kind of felt like 'Enlightened' is an experiment as well. The presentation was so serene and blissful in a way, even when people were screaming and yelling, and then it barely progressed at all from start to finish.

It was an odd premiere that gave us so little to latch onto, other than Amy itself. But it may yet yield wonderful results with a little patience. What's your take on this premiere?
