You Must Never Forget About the Dinosaurs on 'Terra Nova' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 11th 2011 2:00AM
'Terra Nova' - 'What Remains'With this week's episode, 'Terra Nova' (Mon., 8PM ET on FOX) is starting to feel a lot more like 'Star Trek,' but not necessarily in a good way.

The "monster of the week" turned out to be a virus that wiped memories, but the cure was so painfully obvious throughout the episode, that it became tedious waiting for the characters to figure it out. We like a little bit of mystery and suspense with our dinosaurs, please.

As for a larger story, that was relegated very much to the back-burners, which is a common format for procedural shows and adventure series. That's fine, so long as the adventures are fun, and with 'Terra Nova' we do get those dinosaurs. And what's not fun about those?

This week's best dinosaur moment came right at the top of the hour when one of the scientists, in the throes of the virus, forgot where he was and simply wandered outside. There, Carnotaurus knew exactly what he was: Dinner.

It was cool seeing how dangerous Taylor was back in the war, and how dangerous he can still be, but it was disappointing that maybe about four minutes of screen time was devoted to whatever the Sixers are up to. It looks like Josh is going to become their leverage, now that he's struck a deal to try and bring his girlfriend to Terra Nova.

How do you think 'Terra Nova' is developing? Top-notch science fiction entertainment, or rather bland and generic with hints of potential, or worse even than that?

"Reminds me of Star Trek"? That's supposed to be bad? I'll admit the kids are annoying, but there's always hope the next slasher attack fixes that. And a mashup of Lost and dinos, even one that's still findin g its footing, beats the heck out of the 24-hour all-Snooki channel that would replace it if there's a cancellation

I want so much to like this show - I've been excited about the premise and dying to see it ever since I first heard about it almost a year ago. But I think it might be another fantastic story idea wasted by lazy writing and wooden acting. Of course, I thought the exact same thing during the whole first season of Stargate Universe, and then it turned around and got really good in the half-dozen or so episodes before it was cancelled.

Some of the actors in the cast have potential, and new writers could do wonders. They just need to hang two big signs in the writer's room; one that says DON'T DUMB IT DOWN and one that says SULKY TEENAGERS ALWAYS SUCK. Then they'll be fine.

They need a third sign, "NO SENTIMENTAL CRAP". I'm not saying the characters shouldn't have emotions but I'm so tired of the "No matter what happens, we are a family!" and "I love you so much! We can do anything because our love is so strong! My love for you isn't only a memory, it's something deeper!",

A memory erasing virus was from an episode of StarGate Atlantis. It's to bad this show didn't spend sme of that budget on writers. I'm trying to give Terra Nova a fair chance, but the story lines AND acting really needs to improve or I'm done with this show.
