'Dancing With the Stars' Week 5: Ricki's Roger Rabbit Flops, J.R. Shines

by Crystal Bell, posted Oct 17th 2011 11:20PM
Ricki Lake & Derek go '80sIt was '80s night on 'Dancing With the Stars' this week and that meant big hair, big shoulder pads, acid brights, a guest performance by The Bangles and ... Roger Rabbit?

The seemingly unstoppable Ricki Lake didn't look so smooth doing the Roger Rabbit this week, even after some encouragement from surprise guest, filmmaker John Waters, who gave Ricki her big break in 1988's 'Hairspray.'

Unfortunately, Ricki just couldn't find the beat this week, and that definitely hurt her scores. After scoring two 10s last week for her thrilling 'Psycho' tango and being atop the leaderboard for three weeks in a row, Ricki dropped the ball this week, only scoring a 24 and losing her top spot to J.R. Martinez.

But her floppy Roger Rabbit wasn't her and Derek's only problem. Their foxtrot didn't really work with the '80s classic they were assigned, and Ricki didn't look like her usual confident self. Surprisingly, for the first time, we finally saw Derek's weakness -- his age! Having not grown up in the '80s, Derek confessed that he was a little out of his element this week.

Check out Ricki's Roger Rabbit &
John Waters' surprise visit here:

But Derek, just because you were a fetus in 1985 does not give you an excuse for not knowing your '80s. Have you seen the original 'Footloose?' No, not the one starring your sister ...

While I don't think Ricki deserved such a poor score, I do think that this was J.R.'s week to reclaim his No. 1 position on the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, Chaz Bono is back ladies and gentlemen. Just when I had given up on him, he proved me wrong. He looked confident, energized and ready to dance. Even better? His spirit was back. I couldn't even be mad at Lacey this week because she looked like a cute little funfetti cupcake, and how can you hate on that?

I also have a confession to make. I kind of love Lacey's dad Buddy. I think Lacey finally realized that she needed a little help choreographing Chaz, so she asked her dad Buddy to help her out, and he really brought Chaz out of his shell -- and taught him how to shake it! You would think that having Cher as a mother would help you out in that department, but Buddy really gave him the boost he needed.

My only complaint? He didn't dance to 'If I Could Turn Back Time.' I mean, how awesome would that have been?!

It was also an epic comeback for David Arquette, who performed an edgy tango with partner Kym Johnson. It was his best dance of the competition, earning a 9 from Len, who he playfully mocked in rehearsals. I have to say, I want what David's having because he's always so contagiously goofy. And did I mention that his daughter Coco might just be the cutest celebrity kid on the planet? How can you not smile when the camera pans to her and she just looks so proud of her dad?!

The night finally belonged to J.R., or shall I say Jose Rene Martinez? He danced a sexy sultry samba with partner Karina Smirnoff, and it was everything a hip-shaking samba should be: fun, fast-paced and energetic, and it earned Jose Rene his first 10 of the competition, from judge Bruno. Shakira would have been proud.

J.R.'s hips definitely don't lie, and it's nice to see the soap star finally get the recognition he deserves.

Meanwhile, Hope Solo and Maks had a so-so tango. The judges agreed that Hope seemed sexy, strong and powerful, but Len seemed to think she was also too "willowy in the body." Tell me Len, how can one be powerful and willowy at the same time?

Trying to loosen up the ever-tense Hope, Maks told her, "Just sell it like a sexy bitch." Believe me Maks, no one can be a sexy bitch in that red, latex straightjacket she was forced to wear tonight. Seriously, who dresses these people? Oh wait, it is '80s week. Perhaps Hope was channeling her inner Madonna? Bruno did say that she got the "'80s super bitch down to a tee."

Carson Kressley is a hot mess on that dance floor -- but he's honestly the most fun to watch. Now, I know that I get upset when good dancers get eliminated (ahem, Chynna Phillips) and the bad ones stay, but I have to be honest: I just love Carson's energy. No one brings it to the dance floor quite like him.

Anna pretty much summed it up when she told Carson, "You're kind of the heart and entertainment of this competition." This week, Carson channeled his inner Wham!-addicted cheerleader for a really fun (but not really technical) jive. It's pretty fitting that Carson was a cheerleader because he's really going to need his fans' votes this week.

He's just a joy to watch because he has so much fun in that ballroom. I hope he makes it for at least another week because next week is all about show tunes and the Great White Way, and I have a feeling Carson and Anna could really have a lot of fun with a Broadway number.

Guys, I learned something tonight: Nancy Grace was a cheerleader. A CHEERLEADER. She did a cheer for Tristan in rehearsals, and it was honestly the most animated I've ever seen her. But I do have some advice for you Nancy: Don't ever tell Tristan to stop talking. I'm pretty sure that his sexy Irish accent is the only reason you're still in this competition.

Also, the best line of the night goes to that Irishman. After Nancy showed him her version of a sexy rumba, Tristan stated, "That was drunk sex, that what that is." Tristan MacManus FTW!

Here's another thing I learned tonight: Rob Kardashian and Romeo are friends. I haven't seen Romeo since he was a 14-year-old on Nickelodeon, so excuse me for my apparent shock. Okay, joking, I know he was on last season -- and did quite well -- but has he done anything since? But seriously, what is with all of the weird guest stars? I'm talking to you Richard Simmons. Who's next, Gordo from 'Lizzie McGuire'? Actually, that would be awesome.

Now judging from the comments, I know a lot of you don't support Rob, but let's be real -- as long as his family keeps pimping him out on Twitter, he's pretty much in it until the finals. Out of all of the contestants, I think Rob has the biggest fan base. However, I'm not entirely upset by this. Rob does win the award for most improved. Week after week I think Rob actually becomes a better dancer. This week he finally looked like a leading man, and his sexy rumba with pro partner Cheryl Burke really impressed the judges, earning a 9 from Carrie Ann.

Do I think he actually deserved a 9? Heck no! Seriously, Carrie Ann, do you just want to be invited to Kim Kardashian's next wedding or what?

Dancing With the Stars' airs Mondays at 8PM ET and Tuesdays at 9PM ET on ABC.

I think Maks should be fired! His choreography was terrible Monday, and his partner was worse! If you can't stand the heat, Maks, get off the dance floor. Your attitude is beyond reprehensible!

I have watched DWTS since Season 1. In the past there was always someone, be it an Olympic skating star, a massive or fleet football star, or a race car driver who everyone else tries to compare and eliminate for the Mirror Ball Trophy. They never can top the "star" of the competition. However, this season, I must admit, I find myself flipping the dial for other TV shows because their season is nothing special;it is rather disappointing. There is some unbalance in the cast. It is boring, no spark, and the show has definitely become a popularity contest, not for the dancing talent. If the show continues in the downward direction it appears to be heading, I give DWTS maybe one or more seasons before the show will be cancelled.

Chaz is the only one who has gained weight on the show.

Quit referring to chaz as a "he".. when it gave up it's female gender, it became a deformed freak.. no matter how many surgeries and drugs someone has, that persona will never become the opposite sex.. only destroy what they were to begin with.

When DWTS first started there was not a show that I missed I thought that it was really great!!! firstly, they had STARS dancing not basically nobody's, all that show is now is a popularity contest, I dont even know why they have judges they really have nothing to say about who gets sent home and who stays. The only reason Chaz is still on the show is because of his Mom.

I love Hope Solo, she is so pretty, athletic and determined! Hope, let the jock out for a while and let your sexy feminine side out! I mean, come on! You've got the hottest partner!
