Harry Belafonte Takes a Nap During Live TV Interview (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 18th 2011 10:40AM

Harry Belafonte's been making the talk show rounds lately, promoting his new book and HBO documentary 'Sing Your Song' and dropping by the Occupy Wall Street protests. But the 84-year-old singer, actor and activist may be working himself a little too hard.

Video has surfaced online of Belafonte taking a snooze during a live TV interview with the local CBS affiliate in Bakersfield, CA on Friday. When the camera cut to Belafonte, he's seen sitting upright in his interview chair, napping peacefully. The anchor, Layla Santiago, tried to wake him up, shouting, "Good morning, Harry!" and "Wake up, wake up," but she didn't have any luck.

Update: HuffPost Entertainment is reporting that there were technical problems with the audio on the satellite link-up the interview was using. Belafonte may not have been asleep, but was rather "waiting for his cue" from the anchors.

Good thing he was sleeping, we didn't have to hear his idiotic ranting.

I take issue that Mr Belafonte is described merely as a singer, he was one of the foremost activist in the Civil Rights Movement as well as being an actor/singer. He is widely recognized as the elder statesman of stature who has earned a great deal of respect through a lifelong struggle for human rights on many levels. I assume the writer of the article is a youngster ignorant of civil rights participants or he couldn't have made such an error.

We have lost our freedom of speech. Conservatives can no longer voice their opinions without backlash of some kind. Hank should be able to say anything he wants to, just like Obama's pastor did about America and whites.

Hello Queen

LOL, Too funny!! Grandpa is tired and needed a quick nap. My mom whos 62, does that sometimes too. The news anchors play the whole thing off nicely. I think they were very respectful and can't how anyone could possibly get offended by their behavior.

The reporters made such a big stink about it. Be polite and switch to other news and get back to him later.

Your not taking into account the time schedule in which they have to maintain...the entire period of time in which that interview was suppose to take up was now open to absolutely nothing, so they had to burn as much of it as they could with light humor and praise of the individual despite him not being awake or able to realize they were trying to communicate with him. I thought they played it off pretty well actually.

Give the guy a break. He is 84 years old and earned the right to take a nap when ever he wants.

You really don't know anything about him do you?
Do some research, you are woefully ignorant.

For all of you who are putting down Harry B. for his political views, STILL if you are going to have him on as a guest to promote, or for any reason, it's still expected that you be polite and gracious as his host and not ridicule. He appears to be too elderly though for promoting. That observation is reality.......
