'The Vampire Diaries' Star Steven R. McQueen On Whether Jeremy's Dead Exes Will Get 'Ghost'-ly

Steven R. McQueenDarn, those 'Vampire Diaries' actors are tough nuts to crack. Not since the days of 'Lost' has a cast been so tight-lipped about upcoming storylines ... we're starting to think that boss man Kevin Williamson threatens his stars with a gruesome on-screen death if they spill something they shouldn't.

We caught up with Steven R. McQueen (who plays Jeremy Gilbert) and, true to form, we discovered more about what he couldn't tell us than what he could.

Still, the few tidbits he did let slip hint at an intriguing few episodes ahead. We touched on Jeremy's relationship with Bonnie (Katerina Graham), his connection to the ghostly apparitions of Anna (Malese Jow) and Vicki (Kayla Ewell) and how his newfound ability links to Matt's (Zach Roerig).

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

For the past two years, Jeremy Gilbert and Matt Donovan have been relegated to the ever-dwindling subsection of "normal" people in Mystic Falls; they weren't doppelgangers, witches, vampires, werewolves or hybrids, just a couple of dudes who occasionally enjoyed a little recreational drug use and were sadly well-acquainted with losing loved ones. But as fans have seen in Season 3, all of that has drastically changed.

"The first couple of seasons, Jeremy was a bit of a depressed character, limited by death, and now that he's got this new power and all these things going on, every scene has been so much fun," McQueen said. "There's been a lot of building up to where this whole ghost thing is going ... in [this week's episode], things become a lot more clear in connections and the complications, and the relationships grow more and more."

Tonight's episode, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' sees our high school characters head back to class for the first day of the new school year. "Jeremy's pretty much trying to balance out everything he has going on in reality as opposed to these ghosts from his past," McQueen explained. "In Episode 6, you'll learn the intentions of the ghosts, and I think in Episode 7 you kind of start to see the consequences for their actions."

Episode 7, titled 'Ghost World,' is a big one for McQueen's character, and he admits, "it was one of my favorite episodes we've filmed so far." The summary mentions that Elena convinces her brother to use his connection to the other side to help her find a new way to reach Stefan, who is currently stuck in his terrifying "Ripper" persona.

"I can say that Jeremy does have his connection with the dead, and certain questions that need to be asked will be answered," McQueen teased when we asked him to elaborate on what Jeremy and Elena do. "I have a part to play in some of that, and other [things] kind of work themselves out."

So far, Jeremy's only had contact with Anna, who keeps warning him not to trust his dead ex, Vicki. When we asked him if Anna might be manipulating Jeremy, McQueen promised that Anna's intentions would be revealed tonight, but that's all he would say.

It's also apparent that Anna and Jeremy can touch, and, following that thought through to its logical conclusion, we couldn't resist asking if that meant that there might be some 'Ghost'-style intimacy from beyond the grave -- or at least some kissing! McQueen made many coy noises, but would only say, "Hmm ... I don't know. You're going to have to watch to find out." That was also his tantalizing response to our query about whether Matt and Vicki would end up opposed to Jeremy and Anna, given Anna's warnings.

Still, while it seems Jeremy has no shortage of ladies in his life right now (even if two of them are dead), it's his relationship with Bonnie that's at the forefront of our minds, especially now that she knows her boyfriend is seeing dead people.

"They share a lot with each other, but any time there's a new element brought in, especially someone from someone's past, that causes some friction," McQueen said. "That's what they're dealing with right now."

'The Vampire Diaries' airs Thursdays at 8PM ET on The CW.
