Chaz Bono to Receive GLSEN Respect Award

by Crystal Bell, posted Oct 21st 2011 1:30PM
Chaz Bono may or may not have a shot at taking home the Mirror Ball trophy on 'Dancing With the Stars' this year, but he will be taking home a much more important award: the 2011 GLSEN Hero Award.

GLSEN -- the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network -- is honoring Bono, among others, at the seventh annual 2011 Respect Awards in Beverly Hills.

The Respect Awards are meant to honor individuals and corporations that have made significant advances in areas like diversity and inclusion.

Bono, a LGBT activist and author, legally became a man last year after gender-reassignment surgery. Bono's transition was the subject of the Emmy-nominated OWN documentary, 'Becoming Chaz,' as well as his own book, titled 'Transition,' which was released in May 2011.

Bono also made headlines and sparked controversy as 'Dancing With the Stars' first transgender contestant. Back in August, ABC message boards were flooded with bigoted remarks regarding Bono being cast in the celebrity dancing competition. Many of the anti-Bono comments posted on the 'DWTS' message boards targeted Bono for being transgender.

Bono will have to skip a few hours of practice to accept his Respect Award, but hopefully partner Lacey Schwimmer won't be too hard on him for it. Bono's fellow 'DWTS' contestants, J.R. Martinez, Ricki Lake and the recently booted off Carson Kressley, will also be there to support him.

I am infuriated at Bruno's comment about the "penguin" last evening. How hard-hearted and callous can he be. I always enjoyed Bruno's remarks but that was just plain mean! Chaz has had to fight to be who he is and where he is. That remark could stay with him and continue to hurt him each time he recalls his experience. I am not gay, nor am I a transgender person. I am, however, a DWTS viewer. In my opinion Bruno needs to publicly or privately apologize to Chaz.

I certainly agree with you 100%. Bruno should be eliminated from the show. He is not respectful enough to give his "personal" view of someone on a nationwide program. Chaz gave his all, to do the best that he could, every week. DWTS is and should be rating each dancer on their impronments over the course of the weeks. Chaz has improved every week since he has been on the program. Sure!! he is not a pro, but who is? LEN is by all means a pro. He gives the best remarks towards the contestants every week, sometime seems harsh but he is right, But it is to help them improve every week. Chaz has done a very job of dancing and he should be commended for it. MAX is supposed to be a pro, but his mouth did him in as far as I am concerned. Him saying it is his show, and that Len should get out of the business.. Well in my view, Max needs to be dumped from being a so-called choreagrapher for the show. He sucks as a teacher of dancing.
