Marvel's 'Punisher' Could Be Heading to Fox

Punisher FoxMarvel Comics' resident violent anti-hero Frank Castle, aka 'The Punisher,' could be heading to the small screen.

After three flop movies (one in 1989, another in 2004 and the last one in 2008), Marvel and Fox are working on bringing the vigilante to TV. The network has ordered a pilot based on the comic series. According to EW, 'Criminal Minds' executive producer Ed Bernero is working on the project.

The character first debuted in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' comic in 1974. In the series, Frank Castle becomes a murderous vigilante after the death of his family at the hands of the mob.

EW reports the TV version of Frank Castle will be a detective by day, Punisher by night. The comic book's gritty subject matter make it seem like it'd be a better fit for FX -- think 'The Shield' -- but Fox has been known to take chances on risky projects.

Thomas Jane, Ray Stevenson and Dolph Lundgren have portrayed the anti-hero in the film versions.

No word on casting for the pilot yet.
