'Dancing With the Stars' Week 6: Maks & Len Have a Major Fallout

by Crystal Bell, posted Oct 24th 2011 11:40PM
Oh Maks, sometimes you need to really hold in your feisty temper. Maks definitely brought the drama to 'Dancing With the Stars' this week -- but not in the way you're probably thinking. In fact, I don't think anyone saw this coming.

Maks and Len had a total fall-out in the ballroom this week, after Len criticized Hope, calling her rumba "her worst dance of the whole season." Well, Maks didn't quite like that and riled up the already cheering crowd, interrupting Len's critique. That's when Len snapped.

You see, Len gets the reputation for being the most critical judge for a reason. He actually judges for skill, and as he pointed out, he's been doing it for quite some time now. And that's where Maks decided to tell Len that maybe it was time for him to quit. His exact words: "Maybe it's time to go!" Oh snap.

Then Carrie Ann got involved and told Maks to quit being disrespectful, but the damage had already been done -- and Maks wasn't finished. To be honest, I get his frustration. Week after week, the judges seem to flip-flop between judging for personality and enthusiasm and judging for actual skill. You never seem to know which set of judges you're going to get. It seems like the judges definitely play favorites, and they tailor their critiques accordingly. I'd be pretty upset too if I were Maks.

But on the other hand, there was no need to be disrespectful. Maybe he was just upset that Hope didn't do as well as she could have? I had high hopes for Hope and Maks because 'Rent' happens to be my favorite musical, and I really didn't want her to butcher it. She didn't do horribly -- but it was a little boring.

Looks like Maks won't be taking home the Mirror Ball any time soon.

Now on to fluffier drama! This week, Ricki was after blood -- J.R.'s blood.

She might just be the most competitive contestant this season, and it definitely showed on the dance floor. Her quickstep with Derek was amazing. It might just have been my favorite dance of the night. You can tell that Ricki felt at home during Broadway week. Len loved it, Carrie Ann gave her a standing ovation and Bruno called her interpretation of the music "beyond belief."

So it makes perfect sense that Ricki earned two perfect 10's and one nine from Len, making this her highest score of the competition. Oh yeah, and she also announced that she's lost "maybe 20 pounds" since the start of the season. Now that's amazing. Maybe local gyms should start offering 'Dancing With the Stars' boot camps.

Also dancing the quickstep this week, Ricki's biggest competition J.R. brought so much enthusiasm and skill to the ballroom this week. Karina gave him her most challenging choreography yet, and he took it like a champ. Karina and J.R. tore up the dance floor with a high-energy routine to the musical score of 'Chicago.'

I honestly couldn't choose a winner this week and neither could the judges! J.R. also received two perfect 10's and one nine from Len, matching Ricki and Derek's incredible score. So the friendly rivalry continues to week seven.

Now, you would think that week six would mean that all, if not most, of the bad dancers were gone, but I'm not so sure all of the contestants got the message.

I could tell from rehearsals that Chaz wasn't going to have a good night. It wasn't terrible, but Chaz and Lacey were back to their awkward, tense dance rehearsals again, and it definitely showed on the dance floor during their tango. But their biggest flaw? It was boring -- very, very boring. At week six, there needs to be more difficult choreography. Period.

Sorry, but I just don't think it's fair that Chaz should stay another week while another, better, dancer goes home. That's not to say that I don't like Chaz. I think his determination from week one has been incredible, but he's just not a dancer.

It wasn't Rob's finest night on the dance floor -- and that must have been embarrassing for him because the entire Kardashian clan was out to support him, including Mr. Kim Kardashian, Kris Humphries. Rob even got a visit from mom in rehearsals! Not only did Kris have some very encouraging words for her son, but apparently, noting turns a boy into a man like 'DWTS.' So it looked like Rob was going to dominate the dance floor this week, but he just fell incredible flat.

Even though Rob and Cheryl got 'Walk Like a Man' from Jersey Boys, Rob looked like anything but a confident man in the ball room. He looked stiff and there wasn't any pep, almost like he wasn't willing to loosen up and embrace the campiness of Cheryl's fluffy cha cha choreography. Rob could have probably used a visit from recently eliminated Carson Kressley this week, not his mommy, because if anyone knows jazz hands, it's Carson.

Oh look! Carson IS back. He's the creative director for the first group dance of the season -- and it was actually pretty enjoyable. Ricki faced her fears and completed her biggest lift to date. Although, for a second, I thought Derek was going to drop her. But Nancy was the real stunner of the group number (shocking!), as she accomplished her first lift of the season, and it was a pretty spectacular moment. Tristan, you definitely need a raise.

Nancy also wins the award for most improved this week.

Seriously. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I really want Nancy to stay. Okay, I want Tristan to stay, but I really think that he brought out a whole new side to Nancy, and that's kind of amazing to witness.

For example, after Nancy developed some sort of weirdo conspiracy theory where she thought that Tristan wanted her to fail by adding too many spins, the Irishman replied, "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard." Oh snap. I totally though that she was going to kick him out of her rehearsal room, but she didn't. Not to mention that upon hearing the judges praise her dance, she cried. Nancy Grace cried! And even Len was clapping through out her performance -- he seemed to really like her "razzle dazzle" this week. Did I mention that she earned her first nine from Carrie Ann? Yeah, it was pretty much her night on the dance floor. Her 'Spamalot'-inspired fox trot was lively, and it looked like she was actually having fun -- for the first time.

On a side note, if this does happen to be Nancy and Tristan's last week on 'DWTS,' I think Tristan would be perfect as some sort of dancing prince charming on ABC's new hit show 'Once Upon a Time.' Am I the only one that sees it?! He would be perfect!

David and Kym's fox trot was a bit out of sync, but they definitely put on quite a high-energy show for the crowd. It reminded me of everything I love about 'Grease' -- including David's epic John Travolta impersonation. He's really on an impersonation kick, isn't he? Last week it was Len, this week it was John, I wonder if Coco has the same talent.

I'm really rooting for David though. Partly because Courteney and Coco have been so adorably supportive these past six weeks and partly because he's just a likeable guy trying to get his life -- and career -- back together.

Dancing With the Stars' airs Mondays at 8PM ET and Tuesdays at 9PM ET on ABC.

Max has been there from the beginning and is the kind of talent that makes watching DWTS so enjoyable. Carrie Ann, is the no talent that makes watching DWTS deplorable. The powers that be need to take heed!

Goodman and Bruno have never been kind in their comments toward Maks. And, I don't blame Maks for not apologizing, as he had nothing to apologize for defending Hope. Len was out of line and the name-calling from Len and Bruno was uncalled for. That weasel, Bruno, is a jerk. Chaz was obviously so hurt by Bruno's comments, and cannot blame him. Chaz might not have been a good dancer but he didn't deserve to be referred to, time and time again, as animals. Maks stood up for Chaz on that score. But, Derek sat in back of Maks, making faces. It is clearly ' The Derek Show' when it comes to the judges. And, Derek always gets the best dancers, yet manages to out dance his celebrities. Derek loves Derek.

The judges are all full of crap. Max is one of the few standouts of the show and if he goes, so goes the show.

I was so disappointed in the judges. Don't forget that Bruno had just called Chaz a "penguin". That is name-calling and that is abuse! Chaz was crushed. Then things hurtful were said about Hope that weren't nice by Len, Maks tried to defend her and Len lashed out and said that "It's half your fault Maks". Fault? Where in the world did Len think he could disrespect Hope and Maks, the professional, that way. Yes Maks, maybe it is time for Len to leave. Bruno you were brutal. Len you were brutal. Carrie Ann, be you and don't align yourself with Bullies. Being a judge on that show does not give any of you judges the right to be brutal, a bully or abusive. An on-air apology from Len and Bruno is needed and expected from the public audience.

Bruno and Len it's called consturctive criticism. What Bruno did was Bullying. Not good! These guys are not dancers. They do it for fun. Shame on Bruno and Len. Something needs to change. I enjjoy the show but I'm not happy about what happned the other night. So if you want an audience you need to talk to the Judges!!!!!!!! Because I believe this is turning people off.

I cant agree.

Chaz and Lacey seem to think they have a god given right to remain in the contest.

Its a dance show. Chaz isnt as good as the others- and that's a fact.

Frankly, he's been very lucky with the judges responses so far.
He hasnt been judged on the same level as everyone else. Hope has been (justifiably) slammed continually, Chaz got by on charm and goodwill.

The truth is, he's been kinda poor and disappointing, as was Carson. I expected a lot from both and neither really delivered.

Bruno is a loudmouth show off, but he doesnt have a mean bone in his body.
