A New Home and Inspiration to Walk Again for Brian Keefer on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 24th 2011 2:00AM
'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' - 'Keefer Family'After a horrible accident during a simple backflip, Brian Keefer's world was turned upside down. Now he's paralyzed from the neck down, but determined to walk again. That determination and the sacrifices his family have made on his behalf lured the 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Fri., 8PM ET on ABC) to Pennsylvania to help give him the tools he needs to make that dream a reality.

And to help with inspiration, they found other people who've accomplished already some of the things Brian is fighting for. Patrick Rummerfield is one of the most famous stories, and one of Brian's idols as he's regained full use of his body after a 1974 accident left him paralyzed.

Dan Cummings was injured in 2000, and recently walked a mile as proof that will is such a big part of the recovery. Cummings was on hand for the reveal, where he showed Brian what he'd already accomplished, and what he knows Brian will be doing soon as well.

To facilitate Brian's progress, the team built him an aquatherapy pool in the house, as well as several tools to allow him unprecedented independence, giving his father, who is also his full-time caregiver, a bit of free time as well.

I really enjoyed seeing Brian’s reaction to meeting Dan Cummings and seeing him walk right in front of him knowing that he was a paraplegic. Brian needed that encouragement and I’m sure he know who Dan was because he said so many before him have paved the way. He’s a smart kid. Honestly I wouldn’t even have time to watch TV if I didn’t get a free DISH Network Sling adapter that gives me live or recorded TV from my employee DVR anywhere I go. Now with my iPhone and Galaxy Tab I watch when I have spare time and still spend quality time with my family when I get home.

I seen this on TV the other day and I was so moved by this young man, that I had tears running down my face. His family displayed such love and devotion to him. His brothers even steped up to the plate to help their brother, that's something that you don't see much in familes these days. He is one who in my opopion who truely deserved the home makeover. I also believe that his deternination will help him walk again someday. He's so fortunate to have such a careing and loving family. My hats is also off to the college he attends. The students gave up their rec room so he and his dad would have a place to stay while this young man is attending college. I was a home health aid for almost 15 yrs and I took care of 3 quads whose families didn't go out of their way to take extra care of them, This young man is so fortunate to have a family that cares about him and will help him achieve his goal of walking again.
