Len Goodman Speaks Out on His 'Dancing' Feud With Maks Chmerkovskiy (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 25th 2011 2:00PM
Everyone's buzzing about the feud that erupted between Maks Chmerkovskiy and 'Dancing With the Stars' judge Len Goodman when Maks forcefully pushed back against Goodman's critique of his latest dance with Hope Solo.

Goodman stopped by 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated on NBC) to offer his perspective on the argument. "How often, in the heat of the moment, we say things that the next day we think 'why did I say that?'" he asked. "Maks is going through that right now."

Goodman isn't taking the back-and-forth personally, though. "I like Maks, we're good buddies, we play golf together," Goodman noted, before taking a jab at Maks' golf-swing. He then further clarified the judges' role on 'DWTS.' "What they've got to understand is ... they're on trial, and we're the judges. You can't be a judge at your own trial," Goodman said.

Goodman also wasn't fazed when Billy Bush pointed out that in the 'Access Hollywood Live' poll, 78% of respondents sided with Maks in the feud. "I'm the old crinkly judge stuck in the middle, who's gonna vote for me? No one!" he exclaimed.

I can't believe there is so much support for Maks. I like him and his bad boy style, but his attitude the other night was purely being a bad sport. If he has issues with how the judges judge, there is a right way to effect change. But telling everyone on camera that Len should quit and that DWTS is "his" show is rude and arrogant. I would have supported him more if he had not done that.

The judges were WRONG! They are rude and mean. Just because they judge the dancing, doesn't mean they have to me hateful with there comments. Yeah Hope did make mistakes, but they didn't need to be hatful about it,and the pros do the best they can to teach. If the star messes up durning the dance, the pro can't be judged on it. and for Chaz...no he couldn't dance...but he got out there and tried,(thats more than what some people do) but he doesn't need to be called names, (animal names) I don't like what he did to himself...but he still is a human being with feelings.

I FEEL THE JUDGES WERE OUT OF LINE IN DEPICTING CHAS BONO AND SOME OF THE OTHER DANCERS. THEY ARE VERY HURTFUL...ALL BUT THE GIRL JUDGE SHOULD APOLOGIZE FOR PAST REMARKS...JUDGES OR NOT.. I AM HAPPY MAKS STOOD UP TO THEM. POWER IS A DANGEROUS THING. SHAME ON "DANCING WITH THE STARS." FOR ALLOWING THIS ATTITUDE.

Go Maks! Finally someone who stood up for their partner! Judging does not mean humiliating. There is no reason for Len or Bruno to say those kinds of things to people. Let's see them get out there and dance or even teach someone else how to dance. They put in way to much work every week to go out and be put down by the judges.

I never understood how 3 older judges who don't dance anymore & NEVER danced as good as Derek, Mark, Maks, etc. could sit up there on their high horses and criticize these PERFECT PROFESSIONALS!!! Carrie Ann danced as a Fly girl eons ago........big deal.....how does that qualify her to judge these perfectly executed professionals. They should make the judges dance one night......that would be a laugh!!
RIGHT ON MAKS!!!!!!......it's about time one of the professionals opened their mouths!!!!!!

Sorry Diane, and everyone who believes judges don't have the right to judge - it's a symptom of our dysfunctional society that everyone wants to be their own little "g" god, or judge, or final point of reference in whatever they're about. We have become utterly without common sense when it comes to deference to proper authority. True, that authority has been abused and we're all on edge ("go Occupiers!") and there needs to be opportunity to vent, but not the way that Maks did. They're NOT "perfect professionals", they have flaws and they need to be pointed out.

And Len was particularly right about his comment on the rumba heel lead. As an amateur dancer of some experience now I can tell you that the rumba or ANY Latin dance simply would not have that Latin feel apart from the toe lead - especially rumba and bolero. There's a reason for the rules, and if Len can't point them out - perhaps more gracefully - then just shut down the show. It won't be ballroom dancing anymore, but some weird new invention. I won't spend time - and sponsor dollars - on such a travesty.

The best dancer doesn't always win. It's become more of a popularity contest. Non dancers deciding who the best dancer is. Mark Ballard being eliminated early when his team was far superiot to the remaining contestants.

The judges are all a joke. They give the same scores to numerous contestants. In the past they've had many ties.
