Adam Brody Goes Back to The O.C. for MTV's Animated 'Good Vibes'

by Maggie Furlong, posted Oct 27th 2011 1:00PM
Adam Brody, 'Good Vibes'Adam Brody is back in the O.C. ... sort of. His new animated coming-of-age surfer comedy, 'Good Vibes' (premieres Thurs., Oct. 27, 10:30PM ET on MTV), finds Brody voicing Woodie, a horny Southern California teenager with a heart of gold -- and a surfboard graffitied to look like a penis.

Created by David Gordon Green -- the guy behind 'Pineapple Express' and HBO's 'Eastbound & Down' -- the show has an all-star cast, including Josh Gad ('Book of Mormon,' anyone?) as Woodie's new best friend, Mondo; Debi Mazar as Mondo's mom, Babs; Alan Tudyk as Lonnie the beach-bum guru; and Green's pal Danny McBride as Ms. Teets, the sex ed teacher. Olivia Thirlby, Jake Busey and Tony Hale also lend their voices.

Brody describes 'Good Vibes' as "super raunchy," which makes it the perfect show to follow returning favorite 'Beavis and Butt-head.' Keep reading for more details on the show, 'O.C.' comparisons and an exclusive sneak peek at an upcoming episode.

This show is like a surfer-dude version of your lead-in, 'Beavis and Butt-head' ... how do you describe it?
It's sort of a fish-out-of-water tale, this first episode especially ... or I should say land-animal-in-water. Josh Gad, who plays Mondo, and his mother, played by Debi Mazar, move from New Jersey, and it's their first week in Southern California and his first week in school. So it's really a 'Karate Kid' type situation where he's making friends, making enemies, falling in love and hilarity ensues.

Adam Brody as Woodie, 'Good Vibes'So does that make you the Miyagi in this scenario?
No! Who am I? Did Daniel have anyone else besides Miyagi? I guess not ... Miyagi would be like Alan Tudyk's character, this sage beach elder who advises us. He's Miyagi. I'm Goose. If this was 'Top Gun,' I'd be Goose.

OK, now you're switching it up on me.
[Laughs] I mean, if this was 'The O.C.,' I'd be Seth Cohen.

And Josh?
He would be Ryan Atwood. [Laughs]

You brought it up! Does it ever annoy you that you're forever linked to Seth Cohen?
I think it's fine. That was a fairly accurate representation of my thoughts and feelings at the time, and my interests. I'm happy with it. Not that it meant a lot ... you know, I've done other things that I've cared about just as much, but it hasn't meant as much to anyone else. I'm happy enough with the things I've done since and even during that I don't feel dogged by it in any way.

Any other shows that you love that you'd want to guest star on?
I think everyone would want to guest star on '30 Rock' ... but I couldn't get a job guest-starring on '30 Rock,' that's not gonna happen, but that's almost like hosting 'Saturday Night Live.' That'd be cool. All the sitcoms on NBC would be fun, same with anything on HBO. 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' is another show you can't really get on, but that would be fun.

Woodie and Mondo are possibly the horniest teenagers on TV.
Yeah, it's gotta be the horniest cartoon of all time. But I can relate ... especially in that age. Not that you're even hornier at that age, but it's all pretty new, so you're very self-conscious and preoccupied with your pubes and all sorts of development issues. If that wasn't too crass. It's a frequent topic of discussion among many ages -- certainly the one I'm still at -- but teenage years, it's really new ground. So I think it's actually apt. It's a super raunchy cartoon, certainly, but I can still get behind it morally. I still think all the characters are sweet, at least all the main ones you root for ... they're good-natured despite whatever sort of extra-curricular activities they have. I don't think of it as like selling out American youth or anything.

Adam Brody & Josh GadWhat's their big mission in the first season? Is it just boobs?
I think boobs. Surfing is something they get to do all the time, and I think Woody would like to be a surf champion, but boobs, that's new territory for them. They both want to lose their virginity -- I would say that's an immediate goal. If it's with someone that they're in love with, all the better, but beggars can't be choosers. Like in episodes like 'Breast Friends' where they go undercover as women to volunteer on the mammogram truck ...

[Laughs] Wow, the old 'Bosom Buddies.' There are a few scenes where Woodie is feeling up Mondo, because he's got a nice rack for a guy. Did you all practice that at all to get into character?
Yeah, yeah ... I breastfed on Josh. I um ... I don't know where I'm going with this. [Laughs] I did "everything but" with Josh.
