The patrons at Rovers Return are raising their glasses and celebrating. No, not because Tracy has left town; CBC has signed a new deal to keep 'Coronation Street' on the air for the foreseeable future.Variety is reporting the Canadian broadcaster has inked a multi-year agreement with ITV Studios Global Entertainment and, for the first time, it includes digital rights enabling audiences to watch the show in Canada via iTunes and CBC's Video on Demand service.
Corrie episodes in Canada air eight to nine months (we know, the horror!) behind the U.K. and continues to be one of the country's most popular imported series.
According to the U.K.'s 'Broadcast Now,' Tony Warren, the creator of 'Coronation Street' said, "I am delighted to hear of the new Canadian deal, especially as the unsung hero of the show, Harry Elton, who was the original executive producer and a Canadian, had the foresight to commission the program."
Tobias de Graaff, Director of Global Television Distribution at ITV, added: "'Coronation Street's touching portrayal of British life in a backstreet of Manchester has been taken to heart by Canadian viewers and is becoming as important to audiences in Canada as it is here in the U.K. We are delighted to be extending our relationship with our long-term partners in Canada who have given 'Corrie' the fantastic support it deserves."
As one of the nation's most popular dramas, 'Coronation Street' remains one of CBC's top-rated shows -- one out of 30 Canadians tune in daily. Now, with its availability online, On Demand and on broadcast TV (with double the episodes), Canadian viewers can continue their journey with those who have walked, ran, danced and stumbled along the uneven cobblestone street.
